HDR Sets: HDR panoramas, HDR backplates, matched 3D cameras and sIBL

Hi everyone,

We'd like to introduce HDR Sets to you guys Smiley

HDR Sets is a resource for completed shot setups. You can simply insert and stage your assets into our environments to render it from a multitude of perspectives in foto real context.

The Concept

The idea was born during our own lookdev process where it proved to be very handy to have a collection of ready-to-render shot setups prepared, enabling us to very quickly create some foto real renderings of assets during lookdev stage.

...

At first the goal was primarily to prevent us from doing too much repetitive work while producing nice previews for our clients, but it quickly turned out to be a great help for the artists as well. Judging the appearence of an asset in a realistic context does help a lot and at the same time it really boosts the motivation of artists. Being able to quickly send the current work to rendering and get back a bunch of finished shots without loosing any time to set it up is just nice. After receiving lot's of good feedback on the setup, we decided to take it to an official product.

Key Ideas

One of our core ideas is the fact, that all cameras are matched in correct relationship to each other. It's like a virtual set where you stage an asset one single time and instantly render it from multiple perspectives. The asset will always be at the correct position and receive correct lighting/reflections, no matter which camera is used for rendering. It can be used to produce an entire animation sequence, cutting between several perspectives.

Another central aspect of HDR Sets is the idea of a very precisely calibrated image based lighting setup. We spend a good amount of time balancing key-to-fill-ratio's, light colors, ground surface colors and image contrast to really assure an optimal reproduction of the real locations lighting conditions.

With our first release, we approached this balancing through a splitted-components setup, separately balancing key light intensities, reflection and GI environments. Now with the second release, we added an additional domelight HDR which has been fine tuned to reproduce the same quality while using a single Vray domelight or similar implementations like Arnold's Skydome light. With that addition, our setup can be transfered to any renderer that is capable of extracting lighting information from HDR data in a similar way to Vray.

You might expect this precise balancing to be a standard, but we encourage you to play around with multiple sources and compare the results.

In addition, all backplates are delivered both as medium exposed LDR as well as full HDR. While in most cases the LDR works just fine, it's a nice addition and for example helps with 3d projection setups where you do need the full exposure range.

Exemplary Workflow

This is an example on how HDR Sets fits into a lookdev workflow.

1. Setup image based lighting (single click with HDR Sets GUI or sIBL GUI) and do your shading work.

2. Check your shading in multiple environments (single click solution with HDR Sets GUI).

3. Render the asset through one of the automatically setupped cameras (single click solution with HDR Sets GUI).

4. Send additional perspectives to rendering (single click solution with HDR Sets GUI).

Technical Aspects

We've based our setup around sIBL. It's a great way to store all settings related to a proper IBL setup, it's open source and it is widely adopted. We've added camera positions and parameters for each backplate to the corresponding .ibl files and we're also providing the same camera information as alembic, fbx and maya binary files. That way it's possible to use sIBL GUI or any sIBL loader script to setup the image based lighting, manually import the camera data and assign the corresponding imagery to the cameras.

Even though this semi-automatic setup is quite fast, we've also created the HDR Sets GUI which is a maya script that really is a one click solution with our concept. When we started out to realize the idea, we didn't know if the developers of sIBL where interested in adopting some of our ideas and we also had to create our own setup to make quick changes and get everything up and running. Now, several month's after the launch of HDR Sets we're in contact with Christian Bloch and Thomas Mansencal and we now have the opportunity to contribute to the .ibl format and the sIBL GUI. Thanks to both of you for that great opportunity as well as the awesome work with establishing the sIBL format and developing the sIBL GUI!

Prospects

We're currently working on some more in-depth video tutorials, the implementation of our concept through sIBL GUI in collaboration with Thomas Mansencal as well as the next load of new HDR Sets.

If you're interested in checking out our system, take a look at the free set and make sure to watch our video introduction to get a quick recap of the entire concept. Finally, if you'd like to stay updated on our progress and anything related to HDR Sets, feel free to follow us on facebook and sign up for our newsletter.

We're glad to announce the release of HDR Sets GUI 1.2!
The HDR Sets GUI is an sIBL loader script for Maya and Vray, specifically designed to speed up working with material that includes plates and matched 3D cameras. The new version adds an easy way to handle plate specific asset placement within a single maya scene. Furthermore the setup is now better optimized for vray 3.0 and Maya 2015:

...

Shots Tab added: The shots tab is a way to setup a specific renderlayer for each plate, allowing the user to make shot specific overrides like position adjustmens etc. It's a great way to place an asset into several camera perspectives from multiple HDR Sets within a single maya scene.

Setup is optimized for Vray 3.0

Domelight for reflections: While primary lighting is cast through vray rect lights, a domelight is now always used to cast reflections and therefore make use of multi importance sampling.

Optimized dimension handling: The light setup is now compatible with a wider range of scene dimensions.

As soon as an HDR Set is loaded to the scene, double-clicking a plate in the plates tab will switch the active viewport to the according camera.

Image planes in Maya 2015 now work as expected.

A "Copy to Sourceimages" button in the options tab will copy all files of the currently loaded HDR Sets to the current maya project's sourceimages folder and relink file paths accordingly.

HDR Sets GUI 1.2 is available for free at www.hdr-set.com/tools!

Best regards,
HDR Sets Team

Just a quick pointer to our recently published HDR Sets GUI tutorial. It's demonstrating the process of staging an asset into several shots within a single maya scene, producing an entire series of images to pick from. Besides being a step by step intro to the script, it's a detailed demo of the HDR Sets concept. The HDR Sets GUI 1.3 is now fully compatible with maya 2016.

Thanks for the info in your tool.

What are the limitations with other applications and render engines?

We're glad to announce the release of HDR Sets GUI 1.4 !

The central new feature in this release is full support for RenderMan for Maya. We've been collaborating with Pixar's developer team to make this implementation possible and it is great to finally announce it's release.

New Features include: RenderMan/RIS support, Multi-Library Browser, 100% customizable startup settings.

...

Here is a tutorial that demonstrates the new RenderMan/RIS integration as well as an efficient lookdev workflow for production.

The python launch command has been simplified. Make sure to use the updated command:

import HDR_SETS_GUI as hdr
hdr.programStart()

@Pinin: We totally missed your posting last time. We're currently supporting Vray for Maya and RenderMan for Maya as one click solution with the HDR Sets GUI maya script. A lot of the major render engines and 3D packages are supported through regular sIBL scripts, but you have to manually import 3d camera data (as fbx or alembic) and manually setup the corresponding images. Please let us know if you have additional questions.

Best regards,
HDR Sets Team

Recently, we had a lot of requests for a solution to access exclusive lighting information of specific HDR Sets for CG lighting and look development purposes.

We now respond to this demand by introducing the Look Development Access, which provides instant access to our entire library for look development and CG lighting.

...

All backplates are included as downsized versions as well, so it's perfectly possible to drop an asset into lots of backgrounds and validate it's shading within photo real context.

Checkout our updated website at www.hdr-sets.com to learn more about it and don't miss the opening sale's 30% discount, which is available until 30.06.16!

Cheers
