nodal point confusion

When we use a panoramic head we set the rotation point of the lens on it's nodal point.  In effect rotating the lens around the "surface" of a sphere with a radius of 0 mm.  If we increased the radius of said sphere to to 1 meter or even -1 meter can we not STILL shoot panoramas without parallax?  A long athe point of rotation is conatant and the lens is perpendicular to the tangent of the spheres surface shouldn't it still work?

If not, why not given that the mirror ball method utilizes a non zero radius sphere to produce panoramic photos successfully?
