Best Nikon DX lens for 8k
02/20/12 at 21:02:55

I have to shoot some hdrs on-set in London this weekend and want to buy the most time effective lens I can.
So what lens do you guys recommend for shooting with a Nikon DX (D90/D300) and get a nice 8k HDRI with as few shots as possible.
I'm looking at the Sigma 4.5 but I'm afraid it wont go up to 8k, am I right?
Hoping for a fast answer because I have to order one today Smiley

No, the Sigma 4.5 will give about 4k. I use it on set all the time, because it needs only 3 shots. That means I'm in and out within 30 seconds. 4k is no good for backgrounds, but plenty for lighting and reflection (unless it's a car or anything with very flat surfaces.)

For 8k you need the Nikkor 10.5mm. It's my favorite lens, but it takes 6 shots + zenith + nadir to cover the full sphere. I barely ever get that much time on set. At best, I use it to trail behind the shoot and take my time to make some nice panos. But what gets used in production are mostly the quickies with the Sigma, because I get to shoot them immediately after the take is in the can.

Ok maybe I will order the 4.5 for this shoot then.
One more thing, is there a simple bracketing control for the D90 out there that doesn't require a laptop?

That could only be the Promote Control. www.promotesystems.com
Don't know if the D90 is on the supported list.

And you have a panoramic head, don't you? I recommend the Nodal Ninja. www.nodalninja.com

One last hint: With the Sigma 4.5 you should shoot slightly angled up (by about 5 degrees). That will give you a bit of extra overlap on the zenith (where there are likely to be many studio lights). The only thing you'd miss out is the nadir, but that's where your tripod is anyway. And aiming for the three shots required is easy: Imagine your tripod would be a three-sided pyramid, you'd aim at the sides. Basically, shoot towards the gap between your tripod legs.

Yeah the D90 was on the list of supported cameras but I don't think I will get it before I fly out.
My studio has a big advanced pano head that I'm going to use. Don't know the name of it but can look it up in the morning.
Thanks for the tips!

Actualy I think I will buy the Sigma 8mm instead, because it fills up the sensor more.
With that on it's side I will get full circle from zenith to nadir and I should get away with 4 shots around.
It's also future proof for a full frame camera.
What do you think?

Well, pray that it's not the Manfrotto head. Because that is a heavy bulky metal monster. And it has sharp corners that hurt a lot when you bump your head on it. It may even be too big for that lens and end up sticking into the picture.

The Promote is rather popular, you may be able to get it overnighted from Amazon or any well-sorted photo store.

Dunno, haven't shot with the 8mm. The Pano Calculator http://www.hdrlabs.com/tools/panocalc.html says it would give you 20% overlap for 4 shots, but that may be inaccurate.

Let mw know how it went Wink

It went really well and I love it!
Just stitched my first panorama shot with it on my D90 and native resolution is... *drumroll* 8348 pixels wide!
So it just passed my 8k target with 156 pixels Smiley
I shot 4 angles, you can't get away with 3 on a DX sensor.
