How save image in a useable format?
02/13/12 at 23:57:07

I am new to Picturenaut and to HDR. I am having problems because there is no documentation that explains how to use the program. In particular, when I save the HDR image as a TIFF file the file cannot be opened by Photoshop Elements, Canon DPP, the Windows image viewer or any other program I have tried. How do I save the result as an 8 bit TIFF file that Photoshop Elements can read? Thanks.

By the way, if there is any documentation for a novice user please point me to it.

I think the problem is probably that you are saving the HDR version of the image.  The HDR tiff format isn't widely supported by "normal" paint software.

To get a low dynamic range you need to tone map the HDR image.

First save the HDR, either as tiff or exr, then open the tone mapping dialog, find some settings that give a picture you are happy with, press ok.

This will leave you with a 16 bit image that can be saved as either 16 bit/channel TIFF or PPM.  This is probably what you want to use if you are going to do further editing.

If you want to save an 8 bit image then you can change the precision by an option in the menu.  It's under image->mode

You also have the possibility to determine the the bit depth of the output image in the tonemapping dialog.

some image programme can't open tiff in 16bits. you can change the mode to 8bit. and then use a tiff image viewer to import the image again.

I suggest you save the image in a RAW format, as this lets you make changes during processing. It doesn't save even the WB changes you make. Smiley
