Reaaaally?

That article states the latest generation of Arduino uses the ATmega8U2 chip with built-in USB 2.0 controller. That does sound a solution, doesn't it?

therefore, if im right in guessing... steve could just use that for his version of the OCC rather than fiddling around with V-USB?

vinculum 2 is still better option? giving 2 ports [possible 1 spare with 1 for the camera itself] for add on parts for the OCC e.g. photo resistor for a light meter or a bluetooth module so it could be wireless...

The FTDI chip in the Arduino is a USB to UART chip which can not be used as a USB host, it is designed to be used to covert USB (slave device) to UART. The ATmega8U2 is a USB slave device, it does not have a host controller in it.
