Good as the Promote is it does have restrictions depending on your camera - and it comes at a price. For a quick and free method for getting 6 exposures from a Canon do this - "set the camera up to +-2ev, manual mode, and say 1/30th, I then make use of the 'C' setting by registering the settings as they are. †I change the exposure to 1/2000th and take the first set of 3 shots, then quickly spin to C and hold the shutter release down for the next 3.
This gives the following exposures: 8000, 2000, 500, 125, 30, 8 and much quicker than trying to spin the exposure compensation dial which is what I was doing previously."
This tip was posted on this forum a while ago but I can't find the original so apologies to the author for not crediting. I've kept it saved as a Stickie because it is so useful.
If you have an iPhone there is a useful app called HDR Helper which shows the brightness range and number of exposures required.
