Max 2010 - ground plane, background issues
Jan 25th, 2010 at 12:24pm

Hi,

I've been using SIBL with XSI before and now I'm trying it out with Max 2010.

I got it to work sort of, but some things seem to be missing.

Is there supposed to be a feedback sphere as there is with XSI template? I've been tweaking with the settings, but so far I haven't been able to get the background to show in the view port. Also, the background plane seems to be missing?

I did enable the hidden shaders for Max, but may be I'm missing something else here?

Thanks!

This seems to be a problem with 3dsmax 2010 and below. If your viewport background is an HDR or maybe even a bitmap that is created using the rayswitch shader,(the shader that the sIBL template is using) then you can not see the background in the viewport. Just do a quick test render and you'll see the background there, but it wont appear in the viewport with the rayswitch shader enabled.

The only way around this seems to be to set up your HDR scene manually, which defeats the whole purpose of using sIBL in the first place. I wish we could convince the autodesk behemoth to include official support for the rayswitch shaders(and the rest of zapp's shaders) in their next release. But it's been like this for 2 releases now.

Thanks for clarifying that!

I guess it's not that easy on Max, then.

I've been spending the Saturday figuring out the internals with the Handbook and trying to build a lighting scheme on Max from scratch instead, but I'm not quite there yet.

Is there a reason why the template is using target directional light instead of physical sun?

You can have the background preview in your viewport by going to the top menu:

\\Views\Viewport Background\Viewport Background\

Then check "Use Environment Background" and "Display Background."

The template doesn't use the PhysicalSun for a few reasons. Probably the most obvious one is that it wasn't coded to use it. Secondly, the omni does provide some controls that the PhysicalSun doesn't provide.

Dschaga is always looking for more volunteers to help with the Maxscript as he's pretty busy. Unfortunately, the sIBL version for Max isn't as up-to-date as the Lightwave version.

Thanks for clarifying that!

The background issue might actually be a problem with my graphics card's driver - I have used the same background settings you instructed (and just double checked), but all I get is a completely black background.
My card sometimes misbehaves when using portal lights too, and I need to switch to default lighting for the viewports.

I've been using the XSI template before and that's why I'm asking all these questions. I wish I could help, but unfortunately I have no experience in Maxscript - Not yet at least.

Also check if hardware is enabled in the viewport and toggle that just for kicks (think it should say HW in the superimposed viewport text.)

What graphics card are you running?

I'm running on GeForce 9400GT.

I tried with HW shading and without, but there are some weird issues with the viewports.

This might also be caused by running 32-bit version on 64-bit os. That's because I'm still on trial-version - I'm hoping to get the official version (and 64-bit) next week.

that's right and also the environment related to vray are not vrayhdr but hdr imported trough bmp max texture and this is not the same.

I have a problem, I'm not able to setup my camera/vraycam or the background. when I render what I see in my view port is not what I see in may rendering window.
I try what Blochi said about in this topic:
http://www.hdrlabs.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1266902871
but I can't make it to work for me.
