Ground plane use in  Maya/ MR vs. Modo setup ?
07/06/09 at 22:53:25

I wasn't sure what to do with the ground plane that shows up in Maya - it appears with a default lambert shader and for tests I've been deleting it. A friend/ Modo user showed me a sIBL test comp where the groundplane is automatically set up as transparent and displays shadows cast by the object ? Is there an easy way to manually do this in Maya (or chance it can be added to future loader options if not)  ?

Hi o/
It can totally be set to be used as this using a mip_matteshadow shadow.

Check this post about it by Zap Anderson : http://mentalraytips.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

If you think it's a usefull feature I'll add it to the Template Smiley

Thanks a million ! Great info. Unhiding the production shaders and looking at the scene examples he posted I'm assuming I'd just have to apply and connect the mip_matteshadow to the sIBL background shader once the sIBL is sent.

If it's not a big deal adding this to the template options would be great  Smiley The less manual setup needing to be done for "out of the box" renders using sIBL GUI the more "dense artist types" like myself will be able to do with it  Wink The Modo comp test I saw was flawless - and being able to quickly comp models into sIBL envrionments is a huge plus.

Ok I'll do it and make it an option, it's not like it's taking hours to put on tracks Cheesy

Hi Smiley

...

Job Done I think Smiley

If you get the last Maya 1.5.0 Template ( with the Auto Updater ) you should have the shadow catcher option ( it's activated by default ).

Job done ! Works great  Grin

Played with the mip_matteshadow settings a bit and it looks like the only value that will adjust shadow darkness is the ambient setting ? Is this correct ?

Also wondering if there's any way to tweak the sIBL_Sun directional light once the scene's set up if I want the shadow edges to break up a bit ? I've done that in past projects using spots with ray traced shadows and a light radius setting, but haven't used directional lights much.

Yes the Ambient Attribute should do the trick.
You can adjust the Softness Attribute in mia_physicalsun Shader that is connected to the sIBL_Sun Light.

What ground plane are you guys referring to?  I don't see this as an option in the sIBL Loader interface.  How am I missing this?

I tried to create a ground plane myself using the mip_matteshadow, but I am not having any success.  I don't know what should be plugged into the "background" of the mip_matteshadow.  How did you guys get the results above?

So confusing.   Huh

Hi Smiley

There are 2 loaders for Maya : Volxen's sIBL Loader and sIBL_GUI.
Maya MR sIBL_GUI Template has support for Shadow Catching Ground.

You need to plug the mib_lookup_spherical Background Image or something like that into the Background slot, I don't have Volxen loader installed here.

Shocked

BRAND new-

I just dl'd and installed, ran the script, and loaded (is there a difference between "loading and "sending"?) but this is what I see...no reflections, background....nothing.  I'm really salivating at the prospects of using this with mip_matteshadow for outdoor shots but I'm a total noob and I don't what to connect to what...can someone post a scene (could be a simple sphere) or  screen detailed screen shot of their hyper shade window showing the connections?

Many thanks!

Hi,

Here you go :

sIBL_Mip_MatteShadow.ma

Notice that this scene is done with sIBL_GUI, but it should give you an idea Smiley

Dangertaz - If you're not using it I'd highly recommend sIBL GUI. It's the cat's meow  Grin  Simple / elegant and incredibly useful. It does all the setup for you. At the least you can use it initially then dig into the scene once it's loaded and analyze the result.
