New Picturenaut Beta
Feb 11th, 2009 at 7:14am

Marc was very busy on Picturenaut 3. Feature highlights are:

Fully multithreaded architecture
Everything runs in a separate task and can be canceled. Everything. You can cancel the loading of an image, you can load an image while you tonemap, you can create HDRIs while you load....

Full SDK
On top of the standard HDRShop plugins, some skilled coder will be able to write Picturenaut plugins, that take full advantage of multithreading and interactive preview features you. More on this to follow

New Interface
I helped Marc out on this one, and I think we will make it a very functional and sexy interface with helpful hints and tips. The Resize Image dialog is pretty much the template for all dialogs to come...

HDR Generation
- RAW support
- Ghost Removal
- More intuitive Weighting options.

Tonemapping
- Yes, you have "Auto Luminance" and "Auto Contrast" for the histogram now.
- All Tonemappers unified in one window.
- Simple "Exposure and Gamma" Tonemapper.

You're invited to check out the Beta, and please post any oddities and bugs you encounter. Your feedback is very important right now.

OK, and here comes the catch:

There are not nearly as many donations coming in as we were hoping. Seriously, think about the wealth of features and all the effort going into this project! Yes, personally I would love to keep Picturenaut free and open to everyone, but that can only be guaranteed when Marc can cover at least his hosting bills. We're giving it a last shot here:

If you appreciate Picturenaut, please leave a generous tip at Marc's PayPal account!
(the link will guide you to his German site, where you enter an Euro-amount on the bottom and then hit "Spenden" which is German for "Donate". Paypal will take care of conversion.)

Thank you very much!
Yes, "Auto Contrast" makes work easier Smiley

I tried the new version and found no bugs.
Same slider settings as in the old version gave me same results as with the old version (as it should be).

Thanks, Stefan

First glance looks awesome!

Small little thing in the interface. The Image>Tone-mapping... shortcut states Strg+T for the Windows version  Wink

Umm..the File-->Generate HDRI is missing? This was pretty much the only reason I used picturenaut, as it is a fantastic HDRI generator from LDR sources. I noticed the mkhdri.exe in the bin directory, but I absolutely hate using a dos prompt to create HDRI's.  Is this being worked on or is it a feature that's being left out of the later picturenaut releases?

uhmm... no, its not missing at all. Still in the File menu, as well as on a new button on the toolbar. And it has become much better as well...

Are you sure you're using 2.81 ?

ok, correction, in picturenaut 2.81, the "generate HDRI" button is not showing up on vista 64 bit ultimate edition only. It works fine in vista 32 bit.   However the older version of picturenaut(v2.12) works fine on both 32 and 64 bit windows vista.  I have them installed side by side on 64 bit, in different directories.

Either way, I love picturenaut, and will make a donation to support development, as soon as I can figure out this german paypal stuff. Smiley

Just donated. Will continue to donate on a tri-monthly cycle.   I highly encourage anyone else who uses picturenaut, in production or just for personal use, to donate as well. It really is a great image viewer and hdr compiler for those of us who work with HDRI in photography or CGI.

Here is the problem I was talking about. I've attached a quicktime video showing picturenaut v2.81 and v2.12 running side by side on vista 64bit ultimate. The "generate HDRI" button does not show up on my v2.81. Will try re-downloading and installing again.

sorry about the large size of the video, it is about 3 megs and very large res, but whatevs.

The beta feels really good!

I have a question about the HDRShop plugs, though.

The median cut plug seems to be trashed w.r.t working with higher versions of Maya. Does anyone know of a better solution to creating median cut inside of Picturenaut?

Really?

Well, there's still Jeremy Pronk's IBL Tools, which is what my LightBitch for Lightwave is based on.

I have been using the new beta version for several weeks now and have not encountered any bugs.  The new user interface is a big improvement on the old one.  Overall a great product and all the more amazing given it is free. I have donated to help out.   Smiley

Hmmm... I can't seem to be able to download the new version properly. I get "app failed to start because mvs220.dll was not found..." but I do see it in the bin folder. Help anyone! Please!!

Beta version is totally cool!!! I love the new UI, makes it more welcoming to use. Just got done processing an image check it out http://captainkimo.com/content/picturenaut-image-cape-elizabeth-maine

I ran into an error. I saved a file before tonemapping, did the tonemapping and resaved the file as a different name and closed it. It crashed when I reopened the original file, the one saved before tonemapping. No biggie for me since I justed restarted it and it was able to open the file fine afterwards.
