Title: sIBL_GUI
Post by Kel Solaar on 04/18/10 at 17:49:31
sIBL_GUI For Windows, Linux And Mac Os X

Last Stable Release: 4.0.8 - Stable
4 April 2014 - 22H00 Paris, UTC/GMT +1: 00

Last Nightly Release: 4.0.0 - Alpha
20 December 2011 - 21H00 London, UTC/GMT +0: 00

* * * Important Notice * * *
"sIBL_GUI 4.0.0" preferences are now stored per version in a directory following this structure: "./HDRLabs/sIBL_GUI/$MAJOR_VERSION.$MINOR_VERSION".

Welcome to the sIBL_GUI 4.x.x thread!

sIBL_GUI 4

sIBL_GUI is now on its fourth release. It has been extensively rewritten and the architecture is much stable, faster and mature. Here are a few features highlights:

- Built on Umbra: https://github.com/KelSolaar/Umbra

- Script Editor: A Script Editor is available allowing direct interaction with sIBL_GUI and the various resources files.

- Component Manager: The Software is component based, meaning that you can extend the functionalities of sIBL_GUI easily and even tweak or modify built-ins components. There are different factory and core components that create the foundations of the framework and the others are addons. They are optional and can be deactivated. It's possible to modify and reload them dynamically.

- Layouts: Most of the Ui is built around Qt Dock Widgets, meaning that you can put them wherever you want in the interface and store / restore the layout. There are 5 factory layouts ( Library, Inspect, Export, Edit, Preferences ) and 5 user defined layouts.
Right Click on the toolbar to see the available widgets and display them.

- Sqlite Database: Ibl Sets, Templates and Collections informations are stored in a database, it's now easier to organize your Collections the way you want without having to move your files around everywhere on the hard drive. You can add Sets one by one if you want. If you modify an Ibl Set it will be immediately reloaded, same for the Templates. There is also an Ibl Sets Scanner Addon Component that will scan the Ibl Sets Locations to add automatically any new Ibl Sets added on the Hard Drive ( The Ibl Sets are added to the Default collection ).

- Bings Map based Gps Map: The Gps Map is Bings Map based making it a nice tool to see where an Ibl Set has been shot.

- Search Database: The search engine offers various search possibilities, you can for example search in a range of time, to get all Sunset Ibl Sets for example.

etc...: )

sIBL_GUI - Ibl Sets Centric Layout

sIBL_GUI - Inspect Centric Layout

sIBL_GUI - Edit Centric Layout

sIBL_GUI - Templates Centric Layout

sIBL_GUI - Preferences Centric Layout

Hi,

sIBL_GUI 3.0.0 - Alpha has been released ! It's only built for Windows currently : http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/?dir=./sIBL_GUI/Repository/Builds/Windows/Nightly

A lot of things are certainly not working etc, etc ( I just saw that remote connection for 3dsmax is doing errors for example ). This is an Alpha but it should be usable ! Don't spend too much time organising your Database etc, I don't know what evolutions the software will have until the final release ( I will not provide upgrade tools for the Sqlite db until that ).

Have Fun !

    Hi,

Issues with the Online Updater have been fixed, I changed the IODevice I was using to write files for the Qt one instead of the one provided by python and it's all good.
I'll release the 3.0.2 tomorrow or something like that.

    Hi,

    I did a first pass on sIBL_GUI 3 documentation, it's available here : sIBL_GUI Manual
This is for sIBL_GUI 3.0.3 which should be released this week.
I'm currently working on 3dsmax Mental Ray Template, trying to improve the thing a bit ( not very easy since I'm learning maxscript at same time ... ) Once MR template is done, I'll look at VRay one.

    Hi,

    Small post to say :

    * * * DO NOT INSTALL sIBL_GUI 3 OVER AN OLDER sIBL_GUI VERSION * * *

:) Basically it's corrupting sIBL_GUI 3 database, and the application won't start. I spent a few hours with Lee Perry - Smith figuring out why his installation was broken.
sIBL_GUI 2 Templates are not compatible with sIBL_GUI 3 ones, mixing the 2 installation folders will yield unpredictable results.

    Ladies en Gentlemen,

After a few months of work, I'm happy to announce that sIBL_GUI 3 is finally available and out of the cooker !

Notice that there is currently no Linux build for now ( I failed freezing the application ), though it's fairaly easy to grab the source code from github : http://github.com/KelSolaar/sIBL_GUI and launch directly the python module from there.

    * * * The templates folder directory structure has been changed it's advised to uninstall any previous sIBL_GUI 3 version before installing sIBL_GUI 3.0.5 release. * * *

Here is the Change Log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.0.5 :
  • Templates folders hierarchy has been updated.
  • It's strongly advised to uninstall any previous sIBL_GUI 3 version before installing this stable release.

  • Database Browser is properly refreshing when a collection is removed.
  • Database Browser items are again correctly laid out on sIBL_GUI resize.
  • Added "debug" verbose messages in a lot of methods.
  • Fixed wrong versions numbers calculations.

Here are the download links :

    Have Fun Rendering !

Looks good, and the installer runs in English now! ;)

It's obviously leaps and bounds better than v2 but I have only one minor feature request: with the addition of user layouts, I also begin to want the app to remember window size/position between sessions. My custom layout looks bad in the default window size. ;D

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Title: Re: sIBL_GUI
Post by Kel Solaar on 05/26/10 at 21:52:05
    Hello Ichabod :)

Yeah the installer thing was a mistake, I didn't realised it was in french, because it's my mother tongue so ... :)

As for the layouts size and position restore, there is an option in the Preferences for that : "Restore Geometry On Layout Change". Just put it on and it will restore sIBL_GUI size and position on layout change.

If you are motivated you can even change the 3 default layouts though it's not reommended :) :

    - Save a layout you like in one of the 5 slots.
    - open sIBL_Settings.rc settings file ( in your home directory )
    - replace the layouts attribute accordingly.

setsCentric_geometry : stores application size and position for the Library layout.
setsCentric_windowState : stores sub windows state.
setsCentric_centralWidget : stores the Database Browser state.

In the event of a total mess, you can delete the settings file, and restart sIBL_GUI, you will not loose much since the Sets / Templates are stored in another place :)

Let me know if you have issues.

    Title: Re: sIBL_GUI
Post by Ichabod on 05/27/10 at 02:29:48
I was unclear about my question, but your response was still helpful.

I was suggesting that the window geometry be saved when the program quits, and restore the saved geometry regardless of layout. It sounds like modifying the Library layout geometry manually will sort of accomplish this for me, but I still tend to want geometry to always stay where I set it by dragging the window around.

Anyway, your suggestions are helpful enough that I won't whine about it anymore!

    Title: Re: sIBL_GUI
Post by Kel Solaar on 05/27/10 at 10:12:09
Ah yeah I see what you mean :)

You would like kind of a startup layout that is stored / restored on application start and exit.

It's something easy to implement, I thought about it when I did the layout handling code but as it wasn't really a "show stopper" feature I didn't coded it :)

I'll put it back in my task list, it's done in like 20 mins :)

I'm currently working on reading TGA and arbitray other formats and this is not an easy duty :D

Ok, sorry to be a pest, but I'm trying to load sIBL sets into Maya/MentalRay, and I'm having trouble. I think the only thing that has changed is my install of the latest version of sIBL_GUI, and I tried uninstalling and installing again with the same result. I get one light at the top of the sphere, and the following feedback in the maya script editor:
sIBL_GUI | Starting sIBL File Import !

p.s. Found an unusual bug in the MR/Maya loader script.

I used "look through selected" to view my scene through a sIBL-generated light at one point. This creates a temporary cameraShape node inside the sIBL hierarchy.

I think I accidentally tried to render from that "camera" at one point and the cameraShape node became permanent.

Then I tried running the sIBL loader again. I guess it makes a list of cameras in the scene before it deletes the sIBL hierarchy, because all the sIBL-stuff gets deleted, but then maya gives an error about not finding the cameraShape.miEnvironmentShader attribute (because that cameraShape was a child of a sIBL light node, and doesn't exist anymore), and the script aborts.

Running the loader a second time works, because that camera is not listed anymore. I might just edit the script myself and send a copy if I can fix that.

Yeah that's unusual, I'll put that on the Todo List :)

    Hi,

I have binded freeImage C/C++ library, so now sIBL_GUI can open a lot more images formats :)

I'm currently literally flooded by features ( mostly this type ) and bug requests, which is good :)

I'll do a new Component so Ibls can be previewed with Picturenaut, and maybe an internal viewer.

I'll see also if I can make the Database kind of read-only with an arbitrary path for pipelines that want to have a centralized library.

Here's a loader script. I tried outputting from the new sIBL_GUI on 2 different computers with the same result.

Also the old "execute loader script" maya shelf button seems to point the to the wrong location now as temp script save location seems to have changed. Fun times for you! ;)

There is an issue with the Dynamic Lights, I'll fix it asap.

As for the old Helper Script, it's not compatbile with sIBL_GUI 3, you should update to the new one :)

    * * * Maya and XSI Templates are not working with Dynamics Lighs currently. * * *

The issue with the Dynamics Lights is that I changed ( it's a mistake ) the separator I use to tokenize the string when I coded sIBL_GUI 3.

A quick work around until I rerelease them is to manually the Templates and change one line :

    For Maya :

    Code (]tokenize($compactedDynamicLights, "|", $dynamicLights);[/code):
tokenize($compactedDynamicLights, ",", $dynamicLights);

    For XSI :

    Code (]var dynamicLights = dynamicLights.split("|");[/code):
var dynamicLights = dynamicLights.split(",");

Perfect, that fixes it. And I had updated my helper script setup on one machine but not the other, so sorry for adding that to my complaints. ;)

    Thanks for the fast response!

I worked around the weird look-through-light-cameraShape issue by changing the following in 3 places in the Maya/MR loader script:

    From:

    Code (]      for($camera in $cameraList)
         {
               /* do something to the camera */;
         }[/code):

    To:
for($camera in $camerasList)
         {
               if( objExists( $camera ) )
               { /* do something to the camera */; }
         }

Sadly that's an issue with Python being really slow at importing modules once freezed, I didn't figured out why though.

    Hi,

    sIBL_GUI 3.0.6 is out !

I fixed most of the issues people were encountering with sIBL_GUI 3.0.5 initial release.

The features highlights of this version are :

    • FreeImage C/C++ imaging library bind : sIBL_GUI now support a lot more image formats.
    • Threaded Ibl Sets / Templates continous scanners.
    • sIBL_GUI layout is now stored and restored on application start and exit.

Here is the Change Log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.0.6 :

    • Session layout state is now stored and restored on application start and exit. If you had a previous sIBL_GUI 3 installation, you may encounter two issues :

      • The first time you launch sIBL_GUI 3.0.6, the application window will be empty, simply click one of the main toolbar layouts. This is happening because if not absolutely needed I would like to avoid implementing compatibility code.
      • Your settings file will be a bit messy and missing some attributes. This will not prevent sIBL_GUI running properly. It's however advised to remove it ! If you need to preserve some customs layouts, backup your original settings file, and merge them into the new one. Don't hesitate to contact me if you are encountering difficulties while doing the merge.

    • Moved Templates and Ibl Sets scanners to separate threads for increased performances.
    • Added support for command line parameters.
    • Fixed a regression with "Lights|DynamicLights" attribute export.
    • Binded FreeImage C/C++ imaging library, sIBL_GUI can now manipulate and access a lot more image formats.
    • Application walker is now skipping Mac Os X "._" files.

Some of the Templates were also modified / fixed / improved :

    Autodesk 3dsMax - Templates :

    • Renderer settings are preserved.
    • Fixed Bug with VRay Dynamic Lights function.
    • Prevented "White Sphere Syndrome" with Hardware Shading.
    • VRay has now a "Shadow Catching Ground", though the feature is not on by default because it's currently blocking bottom Ibl lighting.

    Autodesk Maya - Templates :

    • Fixed a Mental Ray template issue when a camera is parented under "sIBL" group.

I also spotted a strange behavior on Windows 7 :
I don't really know what I did, but the other day I installed Softimage 2011 - x64, Visual C# 2010, tweaked a few security settings on my Windows 7 ( Uac, etc ) and since then, if I don't launch sIBL_GUI as Administrator, the application is really slow to startup.
I tried to figure out what was the change, but didn't really managed.

Thanks KS, it's much appreciated! The only issue I see is the layout still goes back to the original geometry on app start. I'm on WinXP if that makes a difference to you.

    Title: Re: sIBL_GUI
Post by Ichabod on 06/01/10 at 15:07:34
Now this is not necessarily a bug, and I'm not sure if it's any different than previous version, but I can reproduce it consistently:

If I run a loader script in Maya (manually or via command port) then undo (sIBL goes away), then redo, Maya throws a fatal error and crashes.

It's easy enough to remind myself not to do that, but if it's not something fixable, then maybe the loader script should not be undoable. You can disable/enable undo for the script without flushing the undo cache like this:

    undoInfo -stateWithoutFlush [off|on];

There is an option that you can set in preferences that will restore or not the geometry on layout change.

I'm running maya 2010 on winxp. If it would help to see my error log or memory dump, I can send that...

As for the window geometry, I see that you rolled the save/restore into the saved layouts option. I was assuming that the two would be mutually exclusive.

Now I see that geometry is restored, and even the active "tab" (library|export|prefs), but selecting any of those layouts, or any saved custom layouts restores the geometry that was saved with those layouts.

From my perspective, the right behavior would be like this: If Restore Geometry is OFF, then the app saves and restores geometry on exit/start, and geometry never changes unless I drag the window. If Restore Geometry is ON, then per-layout geometries are always in effect, and the window will resize/position on layout change.

I really don't mean to be a pest about this one thing, because it's not stopping the software from being really useful!

Oh and while I'm nit-picking the UI, I might as well mention: how about saving the Thumbnail Size Slider setting as well? :)

I have Maya 2010 and Xp, I'll check that when back from work.

As for the startup geometry thing, it's a question I asked to myself when I implemented the startup layout this weekend. In a pure code wise perspective it doesn't make sense because it generates a condition / special case for the application startup BUT from an user perspective it's a natural behavior, SO I'll put that line of code for sIBL_GUI 3.0.7 :D

Good point for the Thumbnails Slider, I'll store it in the preferences !

    Hey :)

sIBL_GUI 3.0.7 is out with some enhancements and bug fixes :)

Some interesting features of this release are new command line parameters :

    • -o / --loaderScriptsOutputDirectory : This one allows user to specify loader scripts output directory. It's handy when you are working on a network and want to send to a computer elsewhere but that computer can't access your preferences directory for whatever reason.
    • -u / --userApplicationDatasDirectory : That parameter allows user to specify application datas directory ( Preferences directory ). If you want to work with kind of a portable sIBL_GUI like sIBL_GUI 2, this is what you are looking for ! Specify your sIBL_GUI installation folder or a subfolder of it ( If you want to keep things clean ) and you are good to go.
    • -d / --databaseDirectory : This one allows user to specify the database directory. If you are working with a team of artists, they can all point to the same database. Be aware that modifying the same database at same time may yield weird results and even crash sIBL_GUI.
    • -r / --databaseReadOnly : To make collaborative work really efficient this parameter deactivates all sIBL_GUI database write methods. Usually a TD / Supervisor will choose and configure the database, and all the artists are launching a read only sIBL_GUI instance that connects to it.

I modified also the way I was accessing to the db with multiple threads, it should bring more stability.

Here is the complete change log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.0.7 :

    • Standard Output and Standard Errors messages are redirected to the Logging Window.
    • sIBL_GUI creates one session per thread for SQLite database access thus increasing application stability.
    • Thumbnails size preference is restored on application start.
    • Each component has its own section in the preferences file, resulting in a better and stronger file structure. ( You will will need to reconfigure components preferences ).
    • Session geometry is always restored on application start ignoring the state of the "Restore Geometry On Layout Change" preferences option.
    • Fixed "setsScanner" component regular expressions, it can now process paths with non alphanumerical characters ( "C:/Program Files (x86)/" ).
    • Fixed walkers arguments regular expressions so that they search for correct files extensions.
    • Added "-o / --loaderScriptsOutputDirectory" command line parameter allowing user to specify loader scripts output directory.
    • Added "-r / --databaseReadOnly" command line parameter that disable database edition methods.
    • Added "-d / --databaseDirectory" command line parameter allowing user to specify the database directory.
    • Added "-u / --userApplicationDatasDirectory" command line parameter allowing user to specify application datas directory ( Preferences directory ).

    Hi,

To make easier the process of launching sIBL_GUI from Maya 2011 on Mac Os X, I just updated Maya Helper Script so that you can directly point to sIBL_GUI.app.
I'm then using the open -a system command to launch sIBL_GUI.
The behavior is a bit different in Maya 2010 ( because Maya 2010 file dialog can't directly select to a ".app" folder ), you need to browse and enter sIBL_GUI.app folder and choose a file ( whatever the file ) into that folder, and the Helper Script will automatically tokenize and get the parent sIBL_GUI.app folder.

To resume before the path was something like that :

    Code (]/Applications/sIBL_GUI.app/Contents/MacOS/sIBL_GUI[/code):
    now it's like that :
/Applications/sIBL_GUI.app

    Hello o/

    sIBL_GUI 3.0.8 is out !

This release is mostly a maintenance one, the application should not crash anymore when loading corrupted Ibl Sets or Templates.

sIBL_GUI is now natively built on Windows 7, I think it fixes the slowdown issues on startup : I didn't got any since this new build method.

I also implemented dragNdrop in the three major database components, meaning that you can directly drag Folders, Templates and Ibls Sets into the application : This is really cool :D

Here is the full Change Log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.0.8 :

  • sIBL_GUI For Windows now is natively built on Windows 7, this should fix the slow startup issues reported on Windows Vista / 7.
  • Implemented dragNdrop in various components ( Network paths are currently not supported on Windows Vista / 7 ) :

    • Database Browser Component : You can dragNdrop Ibl Sets folders or Ibl Sets files directly from the Os.
    • Collections Outliner Component : You can also dragNdrop folders or Ibl Sets files directly from the Os.
    • Templates Outliner Component : You can dragNdrop Templates folders or Templates files directly from the Os.

  • Made the code stronger when sIBL_GUI deals with corrupted Ibl / Templates Files.
  • Refactored portions of the exceptions handling code.

I will give a look at the Vray for Maya ground shader thingy this week.

    Have Fun o/

    Hello :)

I'm pleased to announce that sIBL_GUI 3.0.9 is released !

This version features an Internal Image Previewer ( Thanks to a lot of time spend optimizing Third Party Image format reading with FreeImage Library ).

Internal Image Previewer also means External Image Previewer or Editor : You can link whatever Image Viewer or Editor into the Preferences :

And that's where the magic happens linking together the HDRLabs Softwares family : you can launch Picturenaut to Preview and / or Edit your Ibl HDR files directly from sIBL_GUI :

It's now possible to edit Ibl Sets names directly from the Database Browser by double clicking them.
I also cleaned the code here and there, fixed some errors, a potential crash while dragging a huge amount of Ibl Sets from a Collection to another and some crashes on application exit.

Maya Templates have been reworked to preserve existing scene sIBL setup transformations ( sIBL_Feedback and sIBL_Ground ). The default sIBL_Feedback radius has been reduced, and the sIBL_Ground is now properly fitted to the sIBL_Feedback.

XSI / Softimage Templates received the same code changes regarding the sIBL_Feedback radius and the sIBL_Ground size.

Here is the full Change Log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.0.9 :

    • sIBL_GUI has now an Internal Image Previewer : You can quickly check your Ibl Sets images by right-clicking the Database Browser and use one of the new "Preview ..." context menu entry. It's also possible to use an External Viewer / Editor by assigning it in the Preferences. Picturenaut is obviously the way to go : "http://www.hdrlabs.com/picturenaut/index.html":http://www.hdrlabs.com/picturenaut/index.html
    • Refactored the way Third Party Images formats are loaded by using direct memory access and custom FreeImage library build : Third Party Images loading is now 10 to 20 times faster.
    • Implemented Ibl Sets database display name edition : Double click an Ibl Set in the Database Browser to edit it's display name.
    • "--databaseReadOnly" command line parameter properly disable Database Browser, Collections Outliner and Templates Outliner components dragNdrop capabilities and Collections Outliner component editing capabilities.
    • Fixed a code regression preventing "Templates Informations" widget display.
    • Fixed a potential application crash when dragging multiples Ibl Sets from a Collection to another on Mac Os X.
    • Worker Threads are properly terminated on application exit.
    • Switched Darwin Installer to DropDmg application : Dmg icons are laid out correctly now.

    Have Fun !

    Hi,

If you use the collection outliner and use the "Add Content ..." option, you will be prompted to enter a collection name to store your ibl sets, if you have already a collection, or want to use the default one you can right clic into the database browser and do "Add Content ..." from there.

    Hi :)

7 months and more than one hundred commits later the new sIBL_GUI release is born : sIBL_GUI 3.1.0. This is a long due maintenance release, nothing much visible in surface except for the Google Maps that have been replaced by Bing Maps ( Because of a breaking issue with latest Google Maps Api and Qt ). However a lot has been changed and improved under the hood, it should fix some of the remaining issues.

Here is the complete Change Log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.1.0 :

    • sIBL_GUI now uses Python 2.7.1, allowing usage of OrderedDict, Templates attributes are now displayed in correct order.
    • Replaced Google Maps by Bing Maps : Google Maps support is broken at the moment on Qt Webkit.
    • Added "--noSplashScreen" command line parameter allowing user to deactivate the splashscreen.
    • Added support for Templates enums : "lightType = @lightType | Area;Directional;Spot | Enum | Light Type".
    • Fixed an inconsistency related to the comments in the file parser.
    • Help files stored on network are now properly opened on Windows.
    • Modified Ibl Sets now refresh properly within the current session.
    • Added a new fancy splashscreen image thanks to Bob Groothuis.
    • Updated Windows icon.
    • Lots of code refactoring and updates.

    Have fun !

    Hello there.

    In need of some help.

I am running Maya 2011 on windows XP.

I have installed the sIBL gui and copied the helper scripts to the relevent folders in maya's prefs.

I then go to open the port in maya and get this reply in the script editor:

// Warning: sIBL_GUI | Command Port Is Already Open Or Can't Be Opened ! //

then when I go to export from sIBL gui I get this error

    LoaderScript | 'sIBL_Maya_Import.mel' Output Failed !

any help would be much appreciated

    thanks

You mean it was a starter kit Ibl that was producing the errors ?

As for Z-Up support there is not at the moment and I'm not sure there will be, there are a lot of issues related to shaders that I don't manage to sort to make it works in a reliable way.

    Hi Dear Developers !

    A few news :

The core packages received some unit tests ( > 100 of them ), ensuring that sIBL_GUI won't break too much ( at least the core functions ).

I also changed a bit the way sIBL_GUI is hosted on Github :
Basically I have extracted some of the packages as standalone ones so that I can use them properly without needing to duplicate the code for sIBL_Reporter for example or my other projects.

Here is the list of what got extracted :

There are only symbolic links left in sIBL_GUI repository. You can either use them or add them to Python path ( except sIBL_GUI_Templates ).

Here is a quick repositories cloning commands series that should get you setup :
mkdir HDRLabs
    cd HDRLabs/
    git clone git://github.com/KelSolaar/sIBL_GUI.git && git clone git://github.com/KelSolaar/Foundations.git &&  git clone git://github.com/KelSolaar/Manager.git && git clone git://github.com/KelSolaar/sIBL_GUI_Templates.git
    cd sIBL_GUI/src/
    python sIBL_GUI.py
Let me know if you have any issues :]

    sIBL_GUI 3.1.2 is out !

The "Search Database" component has been reworked and features now a new "In Tags Cloud" search option and a new button to clear up started searchs : http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/sIBL_GUI/Support/Videos/Search_Database.swf

    Complete Change Log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.1.2 :

    • Fixed issues with the “Search Database” component and empty Ibl Set attributes.
    • Added new “In Tags Cloud” option to the “Search Database” component. It’s now possible to search for multiples keywords in any order either by typing them in the “Search Database” widget or select them in the “Tags Cloud” widget.
    • “Search Database” widget now has a button to clear the current search.
    • Implement units tests on sIBL_GUI foundations and manager packages.
    • Extracted multiple packages to new repositories for better code reusability.

Seems to be an issue with the install.

When I run the installer is says:

    Error opening file for writing:

    C:\Program Files(x86)\sIBL_GUI\_ctypes.pyd

Click Abort to stop the installation,
    Retry to try again, or
    Ignore to skip this file.

Is this a problem on my end or with the installer?

    Hi !

    sIBL_GUI 3.1.3 is out !

This is an update that I hope will pleased a lot of people : Lights type support is implemented in the Templates ! That mean that one can choose if the lights created by sIBL_GUI will be "Area", "Directional", "Point", "Spot", etc ...

Here is a screencast to illustrate this : http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/sIBL_GUI/Support/Videos/Light_Types_Support.swf

Depending the feedback I receive I may update some defaults ( Increase area lights size or sampling, etc ...)

    * * * Important Notice * * *
"sIBL_GUI 3.1.2" Windows building file presented some issues resulting in an incorrect "templates" directory hierarchy and presence of non related files in the build. It's advised to either uninstall it or remove the installation "templates" directory content before updating.

    Complete Change Log :

    sIBL_GUI - 3.1.3 :

    • Templates have now options to define different light types : "Area", "Directional", "Point", "Spot", etc ...
    • "Search Database" component "In Tags Cloud" method is now case sensitive.
    • Fixed a remaining issue in "Search Database" component and empty Ibl Set attributes in the "In Tags Cloud" method.
    • Fix Windows building file to prevent incorrect "templates" folder hierarchy.

    Enjoy !

    Hi,

    sIBL_GUI 3.5.0 is out!

I'm happy to introduce sIBL_GUI - Lightsmith. It's a new extension that allows you to integrate quickly textured lights into your scene.

Here is a vimeo teaser: http://vimeo.com/20879389

The Lightsmith IBL Sets are available here for now until we find a proper location with Christian: http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/?dir=./sIBL_GUI/Repository/Sets/Lightsmith

The SoftBox A and Umbrella A Lightsmith IBL Sets are provided thanks to Oliver Wolfson: http://oliverwolfson.com/

Depending the renderer the lights will feature more or less options.
Arnold and VRay ones can be textured for instance with good results.
They can connect onto sIBL lights also, and will plug onto them.
Depending the requests etc, I'll certainly refine the light rig, etc...
The templates are released as nightly / beta versions, and will most likely evolve in the future. They should be fairly stable, but lack of warnings, explanation, etc...

For now only Maya with Mental Ray / VRay and XSI with Arnold / Mental Ray are supported. 3dsmax support will come later.

Some development renders done with Arnold:

Notice that this sIBL_GUI version and it's associated templates is not compatible with previous builds. I also dropped Illuminate Labs Turtle Renderer support since it's not developed anymore.

    And the Complete Change Log:

    sIBL_GUI - 3.5.0 :

    • Implemented support for "Lightsmith Lights": http://vimeo.com/20879389
    • Most of the Templates have been refactored at different level.
    • Fixed an issue where Ibl Sets were displayed multiple times in the "Database Browser" component.
    • Dropped support of Illuminate Labs Turtle Renderer.

    Enjoy !

I was looking for exactly that tool for 3ds max, but it says 3ds max is no longer supported? I just downloaded and installed both the GUI and the helper script. Running the helper script does nothing, so i just opened the output folder and then manually dragged the created script into Max. I´m running Max 2012. Any suggestions on what i could do to get it working?

    Hi,

Where did you get the information that 3dsmax is not supported anymore? There should be no major problems running sIBL_GUI with 3dsmax, put the helper script into 3dsmax installation scripts startup directory (I don't have it front of me), then it will be available from the utilities panel, then click "Register OLE Server" and you should be able to make sIBL_GUI and 3dsmax communicate.

    guess i should have "RTFM!"...
Didn´t find it in the Utilities-Tab within Max, but after reading the "Readme" i run it via Maxscript Mini Listener and then it worked.
still having trouble with exposure and stuff, but i can probably figure that out by myself...;)

    Hi,

i have a question if there is a possibility to change the settings of the Loader Script Options
(addons.loaderScriptOptions) Additional Attributes for the XSI MR Standard Template?

i.e.: that Craete Ground and Physical Sun are marked FALSE as default, or maybe take some of the options completely out.

Fitting tha loader script addon to my needs.

Is ist all scripting, and if so, which file do i have to access to change the parameter?

    Thx guys

    Hi Leppiz,

You can do a right click on the Template (In the Templates Outliner) and edit the template.
Then search the line matching the attribute you want to modify, for instance the Create Ground:

    Code (]createGround = @createGround | 1 | Boolean | Create Ground
    [/code):

    and change it to that:
createGround = @createGround | 0 | Boolean | Create Ground

It will make it False by default.

If you want to get rid of an option you can delete the line completely but you WILL NEED to update the hook with a value, for the @createGround hook you will need to change the following line:

    Code (]var createGround = @createGround;
    [/code):

    to
var createGround = 0;

    or
var createGround = 1;
depending if you want the ground or not :)

Now speaking about that, sIBL_GUI 4 (Not yet out in a stable built release) is storing the Templates settings (Per template and per template version).

    Voila :)

    Hi Kel,

thx for the quick respond, that's what I was searching for, looking forward to GUI 4 :).

I have another minor question. I think there is a bug with the saving Layouts commands in the GUI 3.5. When I customize the GUI to my needs and save the layout the restoring is working fine, but when I try to save more than one custom layout, it always only restores the last layout saved, regardless if i used the command in the GUI or keyboard shortcut. :-?

    Hi,

Because I'm basically alone to maintain that project, making it very hard to provide support for a lot of different softwares and their different versions.

The support for Maya versions prior to 2011 is dropped for the helper script however the Templates should still work!

Awesome Christian, it's very cool :)

By the mean time I released sIBL_GUI 4.0.1 - Beta.

The most notable feature is that I rolled in the asynchronous threaded images loading code that should be very efficient with larges databases.
I also fixed an ugly memory leak related to an circular reference issue with Python interpreter ( http://bugs.python.org/issue1469629 ), not only the memory consumption should be slightly lower but the application should not slow down after an extensive use.
For those interested in details, that issue resulted in underlying nodes being duplicated and not cleared from memory, in some extreme case I had like over 3000 Ibl Sets Nodes sitting in memory whereas I should have under 100.

Notice that even if affixed as Beta the downloads have been put in the Stable directories.

Here is the complete Change Log:

    Development 4.0.1 - Beta - Milestone: https://github.com/KelSolaar/sIBL_GUI/issues?milestone=2&state=closed

  • Implemented asynchronous images loading in related sIBL_GUI components for increased speed and responsiveness.
  • A new **imagesCachesOperations** component has been introduced to allow images caches operations.
  • Dropped **NSIS** installer for **Actual Installer** ( http://www.actualinstaller.com/ ) on Windows Os.
  • Double clicking an Ibl Set in the **Database Browser"** component now opens the **Inspect** layout.
  • Prevented a subtle memory leak related to a Python interpreter issue ( http://bugs.python.org/issue1469629 ), slightly reducing memory consumption.
  • Prevented an exception in **Inspector** component when a plate was selected and the view attempted to store the current nodes selection.
  • Prevented an exception in **Inspector** component when current Ibl Set preview image doesn't exists.

    Happy 2012 New Year!

Do you have any special characters in your user name / user folder? There is an issue with Python / SQLAlchemy that prevent the database of being created on a path with non ASCII characters.

    Hi,

sIBL_GUI 4.0.2 just came out of the oven!

This release is considered as stable, bringing new features and fixing some issues. I'm putting the development in maintenance and will only release for blocking issues for a few months since I have some others personal projects to run!

The main feature of that build is the new notifications manager that will lead to a reduced number of clicks, and less clicks is better :)

    sIBL_GUI - Notifications Manager

    and a development video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31_CUIAIhk4&feature=g-upl&context=G244ffcdAUAAAAAAAAAA

It's now possible to search in various locations in the Script Editor Component, that should be handy while editing a lot of .ibl files at once.

    Hello,

    sIBL_GUI 4.0.3 is out!

While the minor version has only been bumped by a digit ( 4.0.2 to 4.0.3 ) this is actually an important major build code wise.
A lot of stuff have been reworked under the hood, sIBL_GUI is faster, cleaner and better.

Improvements have been introduced here and there making it more user friendly:

    • New slick Ui theme.
    • Yes / No To All for various dialogs.
    • Ability to purge the Database from invalid entries.
    • Views default message.
    • Wizard when no Templates are found.
    • Support for multiple concurrent instances ( Although it's not recommended for Database integrity ).
    • Exceptions reporter.

sIBL_GUI can now act as a TCP server and / or client and be remote controlled or remote control other TCP servers through the new TCP Client Ui and TCP Server Ui Components, for instance I use it at work to communicate with Katana and Maya.

An exceptions reporter that will keep us informed whenever the application encounters an unhandled exception using https://www.crittercism.com/ has been implemented.

sIBL_GUI is now also a proper Python Package available from here:
    http://pypi.python.org/pypi/sIBL_GUI.

If you have Python, PyQt and pip, you can install it issuing:
pip install sIBL_GUI
Now for the fun stats, this release represents:

    • Around 580 commits over 5 repositories ( Not accounting the various tests not version controlled or discarded ).
    • Around 275000 lines changed.
    • Took around 6 months to complete ( Although I had a quieter rhythm compared to the 4.0.0 release ).

Here is the complete Change Log:

    sIBL_GUI - 4.0.3 - Stable:

    sIBL_GUI 4.0.3 - Stable - Milestone: https://github.com/KelSolaar/sIBL_GUI/issues?milestone=4&state=closed

    Hi!

    I just released sIBL_GUI 4.0.4!

    Foundations 2.0.5 - Stable - Milestone: https://github.com/KelSolaar/Foundations/issues?milestone=3&state=closed

    • Fixed the encoding related issues preventing the application to work properly.
    • Fixed ui related exception in Online Updater component.
    • Prevented exception in TCP Server Ui Component when requested address is not available.

Don't hesitate to let me know if any issues or whatever!

    Hi!

The Crittercism reports are working quite well and allowed me to iron out another batch of issues for sIBL_GUI 4.0.5! Hopefully you should see the reporter popping less and less.

    • Implemented a better version rank calculation definition allowing to properly compare various version formats.
    • Ensured Reporter is not initialising the Crittercism Client API 2 times.
    • Handle Templates with no attributes sections.
    • Fixed onlineUpdater Component exception when trying to install the Templates in an user defined directory.

    Hi,
Thanks for this awesome plugin, just made my renders that much better and more realistic. :)

    I just have a question, from KelSolaar/sIBL_GUI_For_Maya

I noticed there are 2 files that i did not get when i downloaded the SIBL plugin. gatherfiles.sh under the utilities folder and .gitignore. Where would i put these files in my installation or users directory?

I downloaded and am currently using SIBL GUI "STABLE" for maya. I would also like to know what is the difference between SIBL stable from SIBL nightly? What would the SIBL umbra be also for?

    Hello!

If you grabbed sIBL_GUI_For_Maya from source you will have some more files that you can ignore ( gatherFiles.sh is the file I use to package the helper script, and the .gitignore file and .git directory are used for version control: http://git-scm.com/ )

The difference between the Stable and the Nightly ( Not really Nightly since I don't do a daily build ) are that the Nightly build is much more unstable and less tested than the Stable.

    Voila!

having some problems with installing sIBL_GUI.

Ive installed with .exe file for Windows, but when I try to open the app nothing happens.
I can see the process popping up in the task manager, but it exists straight after. I also tried with the cmd -v 4 option, but still nothing happens.

I have Python 2.6.4 and PyQT installed.

    Hi,

    Same problem here.
It was working perfectly fine but today I launched the program and nothing happened.
I reinstalled the sIBL again but the issue is still there.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hello!

Can you try to see if specifying a custom preferences directory using the -u parameters helps?
sIBL_GUI.exe -u C:\My\Custom\Preferences\Directory
At least I'll know if it's coming from corrupted preferences or higher level issues.

    Hey,

I tried that but it didn't work. sIBL doesn't respond at all.

    Thanks.

Allright, this is very odd, you have tried a fresh install I guess also? ( Removing all the preferences and installed files )

Yes, it's a very strange thing.
I've been using sIBL over the years and it worked fine all the time on my computer(s).

I tried to uninstall sIBL, re-install it again and tried to launch it specifying a custom preferences directory, but it didn't work.

Where can I find the original preferences directory? So I can delete that folder, maybe that one is causing the issue.

    Thanks!

I will release a new build this weekend and will try to provide a console executable also, so that it's possible to get details on whats happening on startup.

    Hi,

After some tests my sIBL is working again :)
The problem: My antivirus "Avast" was blocking the software.
Why? I have no idea, but this antivirus is all the time updating from the net so, probably it got some unwanted updates which were causing the issue.

    Thanks for the support!

    Some issues with 4.08.

The uninstall doesn't delete the user the appdata directory, I had an issue with 4.08 so i had to reinstall since many siBLs showed error , and the issue keep returning because the appdate wasn't deleted. When i deleted the appdata it accepted all sIBLs again.

    It has a warning "sibl_gui.ui.common doesn't exist"

Lightsmiths are not accepted. Only one that i loaded directly was accepted. The

    It shows this error:

TypeError: unsupported operand type(s) for *=: 'bool' and 'NoneType'
    ERROR   : !> NotificationsManager | 'Wed Dec 17 16:37:29 2014 | 'unsupported operand type(s) for *=: 'bool' and 'NoneType'''.

    Sometimes says icons are missing.
