Title: sIBL Loader for Cinema 4D
Post by spedler on 04/12/10 at 11:14:49
Hi everyone,

I've been working on an sIBL loader plugin for C4D and I thought I'd share a preliminary screen shot of the interface. Later on (next day or so) I'll post a very early version of the plugin with sIBL set browser capability. The attached jpeg what it looks like so far.

There's a lot of work to do yet - so far, the plugin only allows you to browse the sIBL sets, and doesn't do anything else with them - but it's a start. The intention is to have a plugin which is PC and Mac compatible from C4D R10 onwards.

Any comments on the interface so far? It needs some refinement but I think most of the info is there.

Regards,

Steve

Hey, that's pretty awesome.

For browsing it turned out the most used view is a thumbnail browser view. Better prepare for that early, in my script it turned out to be tricky when all the rest is already done...

Thing that could'nt be done easily with XSI, hence the fact I did sIBL_GUI first :)

Thanks folks. A thumbnail browser... yes, that's a good idea. I'll take a look at it, but I'm not sure how simple it will be to implement. Still, best to look at it now, in the early stages, as you say.

The interface as it stands is working quite well now, so I'm hoping to upload a preliminary version very soon. It won't do anything except act as a browser, but with luck it'll prove robust enough that I can progress to implementing the actual IBL set up  :)

Cool :)

Did you had a look at Py4d ? Do you know if it bind the whole C++ Api ? I would be curious to know what possibility / constraints it has against COFEE / C++ ?

Okay, well that didn't prove as difficult as I thought it might, got a graphical browser working now as the attachment shows. That was good advice, thanks.

Re Py4D, I haven't looked at this much. I don't think it binds the whole API yet (though I could be wrong, I haven't really looked at it). It may well bind more of the C++ API than COFFEE does, eventually. As you know, Maxon have just bought it from the developer, so there will be a lot of further development, I expect. I'm sure it will be more capable than COFFEE and I suspect it will become the de facto scripting language for C4D, possibly with further COFFEE development being quietly dropped.

Wow, you're moving at light speed! Awesome!

Another thing to keep in mind: We're in the process of opening up some things, namely allowing multiple entries for the items in a sIBL set. Multiple lights instead of just one key light are the first step (the Factory Catwalk is an example set).

In the next revision we'll include backplates with camera registration, and that will really call for multiple instances.

Just so you know, keep your data structures extensible. I cornered myself in the Lightwave script, and I will have to rewrite a whole bunch of things to allow for that.... You have the chance to keep it extensible from the beginning.

Title: Re: sIBL Loader for Cinema 4D
Post by spedler on 04/13/10 at 19:08:48
Thanks. Yes, I'm quietly ignoring multiple lights at present, but I hope they will be in the final version. The data structure should be sufficiently extensible, the main problem of course is that there's no way of knowing how many lights are in the set until you read it, so allocating storage space for the light data in advance isn't possible. Unless you kludge it by assuming there will never be more than n lights in any set (which I hate doing because there will inevitably be one which breaks that rule).

As promised, here is a very preliminary version of the loader for C4D. At the moment it's just a browser; it doesn't actually set anything up in the scene.

To try this you'll need C4D R11 or higher (the final version is intended to run on R10 or later) and a PC. I will be doing a Mac conversion when it gets to a more usable state.

Please do read the readme.txt file in the archive. It's full of awful warnings about not risking this plugin when working on something you would prefer not to lose.

I'd be grateful for any comments and/or bug reports. I'm going to leave the interface for now, so that people have a chance to play with it, and get on with making it do something useful  :)

Steve

Just to keep you updated, the loader is now working with basic functionality. I'm just sorting out the multiple lights issue and one other thing I want to do, then I'll upload a working version. There are still some other issues to resolve that I'll need to ask about in these forums, but those are really my uncertainty about one or two of the parameters and won't prevent a functional version from appearing soon.

Beta version now available

A beta version of the sIBL loader for C4D is now available. This has nearly all the functionality I want to include for the initial release version. There are one or two small options still to implement, but while I do that I thought I would make a working version available. This will let you browse sIBL sets and apply them to a scene.

Please feel free to download it and try it out, bearing in mind that it is not quite complete and needs some further crash-proofing. A manual in pdf format is included in the archive.

When I have added the remaining things I want to include, I'll publicise it more widely in the C4D community at large, but folks here get to see it first  :)

At the moment you need a PC and at least release 11 of C4D. Those of you with a Mac or R10 of C4D, I will be producing versions for you in the final release.

Thanks chaps, especially for the nice comments about the manual. I quite like writing technical documentation, so I hope it shows through. What I'm not quite so good at is project management, because the included docs are an older version and the upload should have had a newer version in it! :-/

Anyway, the doc will be updated for the release version, so no harm done.

Release candidate now available

The attached version of the sIBL loader for C4D is a release candidate. All the functionality I wanted to implement is there and known bugs squashed (unknown bugs, of course, I can't vouch for!).

The manual has been updated and is now complete.

The final work I need to do, barring any last-minute bugs, is to recompile for C4D R10 and port it to the Mac. This will take a day or two, then I'll release it to the C4D community at large. As usual, any comments,  etc., please do let me know.

Release version

The release version of the loader for C4D is now available. I've completed the final tweaking and (I hope) debugging, plus compiled versions for release 10/10.5 and release 11/11.5 of C4D. These are different versions because the Cinema SDK differs significantly between  R10 and R11.

I've also cross-compiled it for the Mac, so it's available in both R10 and R11 releases for that platform as well, in the same archive.

Both versions are attached. If it's possible to add it to the ibl software/loader scripts page here at some point, that would be great, since then potential users can get it from here without having to go to my own site. The manual gives details of what I think is its compatibility with the sIBL 2.0 standard, in the same format as the page here.

I fully intend to develop this further, but at this point I'm going to release it to the wider C4D community and see what the reaction is (and how many bugs users find  :-/ ).

Update

OK, it's on the official Loader page. I combined the R10 and R11 versions in one archive, just so I can make it a single link. And whileI was at it, I made the table header sticky so the table reads better...

[smiley=thumbsup.gif]Big Cheers to Steve Pedler, this must have been the fastest sIBL implementation I have ever seen. Your documentation is outrageously awesome, it puts the rest of us to shame! I hope the Cinema4D community appreciates your efforts as much as we do.

Hey,

Thanks for the praise - undeserved really, I took longer to do this than I should have done IMO.

Great to see it on the downloads page. When I update it - I've got some ideas and had some requests for some tweaks and features - I'll send revised versions so that the latest version is here as well as on my site.

So far it seems to have gone down quite well in the C4D community, so I hope it increases awareness of the sIBL method and more traffic here from Cinema users.

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd post a progress report on the C4D loader plugin. I'm now working on version 1.1, and the main features in this will be:

  • support for multiple collections, so users don't have to keep all their sIBLs in one ever-expanding folder
  • a search/filter function, which other scripts have but the current C4D version does not
  • some interface tweaks and minor enhancements
  • and most importantly IMO, compatibility with Vray for C4D

The first three on this list are done, I'm just working on the Vray compatibility - most of this is working now, I just need to add 2-3 features and it should be ready for trialling. I want to ask some of the users of Vray for C4D to give this a thorough workout before release - I'm not a Vray expert so my implementation might not be what's most desirable - but hopefully it'll all be done around the end of this month.

Version 1.1 beta

Version 1.1 of the sIBL loader for Cinema 4D is now available. There's quite a lot extra in this version, especially the addition of Vray support and linear workflow implementation. For the moment therefore, I'm calling this beta software - more because I would like to know it's okay before calling it a finished release than because I expect any problems.

Because of this, it's only been compiled for R11 and R11.5 of C4D; unfortunately the radically changed shader system in R11.5 needs a different version as v1.1 of the loader now contains a custom shader. The additional functionality is as indicated in my post above this one. I'll compile it for R10 as well once I am happy that it's a stable version.

Both Mac and PC plugins are contained in the attached .zips, along with an updated manual. Make sure you download the correct version for your release of C4D.

Please do let me know of any problems! I'll be releasing it to the wider C4D community in the next couple of days.

Hi,

I'm nearly done with it. I've added a little more functionality due to a user's request. Also, Vray for C4D 1.2.5 has just been released (as of a couple of days ago) and I'd like to give the loader a thorough workout with the new version. But I don't anticipate any problems (I just know I'm going to regret having said that!).

So if you can give me a few days I'll have a final version ready to go on the main page.

...and now R12 of C4D has just been released, which is apparently going to require a recompilation of ALL plugins! So that'll have to wait until my copy of R12 arrives (hopefully any time now) and I can recompile and test in R12. :o

Title: Re: sIBL Loader for Cinema 4D
Post by spedler on 09/22/10 at 17:25:05
At last it's done!

New versions of the sIBL Loader for Cinema 4D are now available. This includes the functionality from the beta version (see post #34 above) plus one or two extras and, of course, a number of bug fixes and tweaks.

However - don't you just hate it when you see that word - there is a slight downside. Well, two. Firstly, Vray support proved impossible to implement for C4D R10 because Vray for C4D doesn't support R10 any more. It does support R10.5... but it's not possible for me to compile a separate version for R10.5 as the SDK is no longer available from Maxon.

The other issue is that due to very significant changes in the Cinema SDK, plugin versions for R11 don't work in R11.5, and versions for R11.5 had to be reworked and recompiled for R12. So, there are now four separate versions of this plugin depending on which release of C4D you have.

I've uploaded a large archive with all four versions in it, but if you just want the specific one for your release of Cinema, please go to my site (http://www.microbion.co.uk/graphics/c4d/sIBLLoader.htm) and download it from there. (It'll be another 24 hours before they are available, if you need the new version right now, download the attached archive.)

As always, if you find any bugs or have any suggestions, please let me know.

Steve

I don't have a problem with Maxon doing what they did with the transition to R11.5 and then to R12. Most developers have just got on and recoded/recompiled their plugins (occasionally a little grumpily, but hey). Underlying the changes is a huge rewrite of the code base for Cinema, which was required for better things in the future. The downside is the need to compile multiple versions, but hopefully that will ease a little with future Cinema releases.

Where I do have a problem with Maxon is that they won't make the SDK for older versions available any more. I have the SDK for all versions from 8.5 upwards, but only for PC up to R11. From R11 onwards, Maxon supplied both PC and Mac versions for each release. I have the SDK for PC and Mac for R10 by fortuitously finding a demo copy on an old cover disk (not ideal, but it works, and many C4D developers use the demo versions for development, because it includes the full SDK). What I don't have is the SDK for the Mac for R10.5, and Maxon refuse to make it available, so I can't compile cross-platform for that release. Fortunately R10 plugins almost always work on R10.5, so it hasn't been a problem until now, when the latest Vray for C4D supports R10.5 but not R10.

Not sure, Leonard. If you could hunt down the R10.5 SDK from somewhere and hand it to Steve, he would probably make it happen. This is just the kind of annoying thing that is wasting time for a free plugin developer. Takes the fun out of it.

Anyway, I have just posted the new versions on the download page. Sorry for the delay.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay - been away for a few days. I tried getting a copy of 10.5 for the Mac from Maxon way back. I have it for PC, as I mentioned. The problem is that the SDK isn't separate from C4D itself, so I would basically need a copy of C4D R10.5 for the Mac, which is of course no longer available. I asked Maxon for a demo copy - they must have some lying around still - but the message was that they would not provide it since they don't offer support for that version of the SDK any more.

So unless anyone still has an old demo version for the Mac there doesn't seem to be any solution. I can't believe that Maxon would really have any issues with a third party making an old demo version available, it's not warez or anything like that at all.

I can tell you for certain that the loader works with R12 on the Mac :-)

I'm not sure at the moment why you're having problems. If you've pointed the loader to a collection, and that's a valid path on your machine, then the loader should read any sIBL sets in that path. So, I know it's a silly question, but just to check, have you downloaded some sIBL sets from the archive on this site or elsewhere? I ask because if you don't have any sets yet, you won't see anything in the preset browser.

Secondly, if you do have some sets, are they in the correct hierarchical layout as specified in the manual? It should look something like this:

- collection folder
         |
         -> set folder 1
         |    |
         |     -> .ibl file
         |    |
         |     -> various image files
         |
         -> set folder 2
         |
         -> set folder 3
         |
         -> etc., etc.

You MUST have it set up so that each sIBL set is in its own folder which is a sub-folder of the collection. The loader must be pointed at the collection; if you point the loader directly at a set folder (i.e. one which contains a file with the extension .ibl) it will not work.

Can you check these things and let us know the results?

Steve

I have a simple question about the sIBL plugin.
Firstly...thanks to spedler for doing this :)

I'm using c4d r12 and I typically work in 'Linear' mode.
I see that the sIBL has a tick box for linear as well.  If I'm working in Linear within c4d should I also tick this box in the sIBL or leave unchecked?

thanks,
Rick

Title: Re: sIBL Loader for Cinema 4D
Post by spedler on 06/01/11 at 16:16:57
Hi Rick,

Yes, this can be confusing. It's covered in the manual - here's the relevant section about the LWF switch in the loader:

"Very important: you should be aware that all this option does is cause the plugin to apply the preset and set up render options so that it is compatible with a linear workflow. If it is turned on, it will override the settings in the document; so that if you are using C4D R12 and have the Linear Workflow switch in the document settings enabled (as it is by default), turning on the LWF switch in the loader will turn off the LWF switch in the document settings when you apply the preset. It seems illogical, but if this wasn’t done, you would in effect be making the necessary changes to implement LWF twice."

There's more detail in the manual about the changes made to implement LWF, but to answer your question, you can have the R12 LWF switch on or off - it doesn't matter, the loader will do its own thing anyway.

maybe another noobie question...but if I wanted to say use the images in my scene, how would you go about generating the shadow for an object as my typical process of compositing the background would not work with one of these sets.

This isn't so simple. It's a big hole in Cinema's compositing tag, IMO. There are three possibilities:

1- try the shadow catcher plugin that's been around for a long while now - it might work for you
2 - see the maxon tutorial on cineversity about this (of course, this may be no more than what you're already doing)
3 - use Vray, which handles this without any problem

Sorry I can't be of more help, but there'e no easy answer to this one in C4D unfortunately. If you search on cg talk and at c4d cafe, you'll find a lot of threads about this.

I've used Vray and the sIBL loader with some really good results. I don't think there is a workaround either. I'm just a noobie tho, so don't count on too much of what I post. Anyhoo, what I am looking for is a good resource about how sIBL sets are created. Thanks to all of you brilliant HDRI people in advance!

Thank's for doing this, it is an outstanding plugin!!!

Now I'm just going to figure out how to make my own sets!

To do what? If it's something to do with the sIBL loader for C4D, I'll do my best to help... if I know what the problem is...

Since v11, the C4D documentation claims that no extra render options (like the Color Correction item) and no texture corrections are necessary to use Linear Workflow. According to the docs, all of this is done automatically (and internally) by C4D when you enable the LWF button.

I bring this up because I believe the C4D sIBL loader is still adding a Color Correction item with 2.2 gamma correction to the renderer, which if I'm reading things correctly will result in incorrect, overly bright renders.

Thanks for creating this, by the way! It works awesome and is very well designed.

Apologies for the delay in answering, I've been unable to do much coding for a few weeks due to illness.

I'm about to recompile the loader for C4D R13 and R14. There have been a lot of changes since the last version - for example, color management and LWF are much improved, the new physical renderer has become available, and so on - that it really needs a new version. Using the loader with Vray also needs some changes.

Bear with me for a little longer and this will be available. The issues you raise with regard to LWF will be sorted out (though the Maxon docs are incorrect by the way - in R12 LWF and color management was working incorrectly, but in R13 this seems to have been fixed).

The earlier version for R12 and earlier will remain available of course, but I won't be rebuilding the plugin for those releases of C4D.

This is coming along quite nicely. I've added Lightsmith implementation to the new version, here's a render using Vray for C4D, with the out of the box settings (except intensity turned up a little).

Should be available in a few days.

Thank you. It's in beta-testing at the moment, which is taking a bit longer than I thought, but will be available very soon.

i am verry happy with the last version of the loader in r14 - ok lwf is a bit difficult to setup but all in all its a top enhancement for c4d. using it every day! grate to hear that you work on a new version spedler.  [smiley=smiley.gif]

Having trouble making a collection show up.  sIBL loads properly, but when I go to prefs. tab and 'add collection' it doesn't show up.  I have the path set properly for the 'edit' as well.

Please make sure you have set up the file structure correctly. A common mistake people make is to unzip all the sIBL sets so that all the files are placed into one large folder. This won't work: each individual set MUST be in its own folder. Those set folders are in turn sub-folders of a parent folder, and that is your collection folder.

It sounds more complicated than it really is. The process is explained in detail in the manual.

If you can't get the current version from here, you can get it direct from my site at http://www.microbion.co.uk/graphics/c4d/sIBLLoader.htm

I've been so busy working on other things that I just haven't had the chance to release the update. I'll try to do that ASAP, thanks for the reminder.

I've been incredibly busy doing other things and just haven't had the time to do anything more with the loader. But it's complete as far as I can see, so I'm going to release it anyway under the GPL so that other people can tweak it if necessary.

The PC builds are done - just have to do the Mac ones and then it's ready. If there are no unexpected problems on the mac, should be within 24 hours.

And it is done! Builds are available for PC and Mac on R12, R13, and R14.

I will upload these to my site shortly, and see about getting them uploaded here, too.

(I'm surely glad to get this done at long last!)

Will this work in R15?

Title: Re: sIBL Loader for Cinema 4D

Any chances that this will be ported to Cinema 4D R16?
It is still working, but the thumbnails are showing 4 rows of data now, and the last row is halved, so you miss a lot of information and you need to side scroll constantly.
It seems that it is just a small change somewhere to make it look as it was on R15 and below, so I have my fingers crossed.

Cheers!!!

PS: I still use this, even after so many years, so great job!  ;)
