Awesome.

I updated the Loader page to include XSI. Can you please doublecheck the table for me?
Linked to the framework thread in the sidebar, not sure about the way we would the distribution once the framework has templates for all sorts of software... the table is full!
Also made a nifty little XSI-Icon for the forum... It's all about style ;)

Worldscale (to control
the sun distance and global scale) : Yes provided by XSI template

Northdirection
(to rotate the enviroment) : Directly in the interface, you can rotate the feedback sphere, wich is linked to the environment shaders matrix
so I would be tempted to say yes ;D

Matte - ground plane
(to receive radiosity shadows) It will come, I just didnt put the shader on it like did Dschaga on max (will do it soon

Direct link to sIBL-Edit : Yes

Voilà !

Thanks Intuition, don't hesitate to give me feedback etc, I got some suggestions from Thiago (TC) on CGTalk, about the XSI Template, I'll update it this weekend to be faster (my code is very basic on it), include a progress bar otherwise you can think XSI is frozen and change for the new introduced linear workflow.
By the way I'm still trying to connect directly sIBL_GUI to XSI, I managed with 3dsmax and Maya, but I don't have luck with XSI.

Big Update today for XSI users, sIBL_GUI can now directly connect to XSI, improved Template with progress bar, use of the new color management, option for physical sun shader onto the sun, a big part of the code has been converted to object model, the loading should be really faster !  ;D

Be advised that now I'm using the new color management system of XSI, tonemapping nodes are not needeed, you should manually remove them from the cameras in scene previously builded with sIBL_GUI !

It's certainly because the sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server is not started. The first time you install the server Addon you have to manually start the server (it will be automatically started next times you launch XSI). It's located near the others sIBL_GUI menu entries. Let me know if you have any problems, the new server addon should work on 32 and 64 bits XSI.

how hard would it be to add a feature to turn the background primary ray visibility in the GUI options ?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/09/08 at 21:01:03
Hello Keksonja o/

You would like to have the possibility to directly have your background not displayed in the render ? In fact if you dont check create background in the common attributes, there should not be anything connected into the eye rays slot of the rayswitch, tell me if it works for you ! (btw I just realised that you will not have any texture on the feedback doing like this, I'll correct this in the next realease)

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by keksonja on 10/11/08 at 08:31:29
Well there is another issue... if you turn off the background by using Create Background False not only that it doesn't create the feedback but  most importantly it does not contribute the light to the scene.  It disconnects the whole Visible Rays (EYE) hookup....

What I would like to have is the ability to just turn the sIBL_Background_Clip - Intensity - Background from 1 to 0

Leaving everything in the viewport visible but on render time not

Also I see that the sun in most cases is too bright does that have to do with the plug the way it translates the intensity or its just the hdr that needs to be fixed ?

Thanks :)

P.S. I noticed another thing is that if I turn the feedback to false or off then the lighting contribution changes too.  Is this due to rotation changes that is happening or something else?  (After some testing I confirm that this has to do with rotation constraint or rotation in y of the sphere when its on and off .... not a big issue)

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/11/08 at 10:35:13
Hey keksonja o/

I just noticed there is a bug yeah when you turn off Create Background, in fact the rayswitch should always use the fg port to provide the lighting and it's currently not the case ( something that I destroyed when I improved the template). I will correct this, it's just a line of code.
The Background texture now stay visible in the viewport. It's more user friendly this way :).
The excessive sun brigthness is certainly caused by the physical sun shader option, I need to average it with the classic sun (at leas find about the same intensity output).
I know for the rotation thing, it's an old thing I need to correct !

I will release an improved template really soon (1 hour max) that should correct all this (except maybe the feedback rotation).

See you soon and thank you very much for testing ! :)

Thomas

Edit : Oh and for the sun brightness thing, since it's rendered in linear workflow you should compensate your input colors :

a 0.5 grey should turn into a 0.5*(1/2.2) = 0.22725 one (that may explain why you find the sun really bright)

And for the rotation thing, in fact the script is crashing when you desactivate the feedback creation :| It should be fixed in the new template.

Post by keksonja on 10/13/08 at 15:05:44
From quick testing it works fine... well the script never crashed for me even with that create feedback option... i just noticed that the rotation changes but that is not a big deal like you said its always nice to have feedback and I agree.

As I work with the plug if I notice something else I will let you know.

Thanks for your great work ! ;D

Also the sun option maybe comes form the multiplier but its not a big deal i just take it down manually its fine

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/13/08 at 16:08:03
Hi :]

The feedback should not rotate anymore I think ( I didnt double checked but it seems to me that after correcting the bugs, the behavior was correct). I will certainly add a new option where the template will try to update the scene more than a full clean/deletion each time. For your sun intensity you can maybe calm it down in the sIBL file directly so you don't have the problem each time (you have a shortcut directly to sIBLedit in sIBL_GUI).

Thanks for your feedback !

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by keksonja on 10/13/08 at 20:54:32
Ohhh I see so the whole scene is being replaced thats why the rotation gets messed up .... That would be cool if you could make the script to just update the scene and not full clean/deletion each time!

Yes I will try to control the multiplier in the file directly in sIbleEdit.

Thanks !

Hello all. First thanks for Kel Solaar and all team that made this possible.

Some questions, doubts. XSI cames with a default light is that supposed to stay there or should we change it? In my viewport when i put it in texture mode i only get random colors  in every face of sphere not the supposed backgound image. Maybe some XSI option?

I would be tempted that the big jpg file uses it. Looks like there is a lot of pixels in it ! :]

Hello and Welcome Pinin !

Basically the default light and all others lights are hidded if you keep the "Hide Lights" option to true, so they have currently no interaction in lighting. You can of course delete it. Btw for the random color it's really strange, it's working fine for me on 4 computers, maybe a graphic card driver issue ? can you display other textures or is it only the sIBL one that doesn't work ?

Thomas

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Pinin on 10/14/08 at 23:19:34
Thanks. I tested further and maybe it is related to some resolution option in XSI. That is only what i can guess i have put the 8000x4000 jpg image in a cube and it got the random colors while lower res were okay.

Post edit: can you tell me what is your value for Preferences>Display>Max Texture Size for New Image Clips and Thumbnails?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/15/08 at 09:21:59
It's currently at 1024, what kind of CG are you using ? I think all the computers I have tested on are equipped with Nvidia ( Quadros for most of them ).

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Pinin on 10/15/08 at 21:33:29
1024 here too. ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 modded to Fire GL 128mb that have been  working very well with XSI.

Okay i have found the culprit. I had in Image Clip Node in Render Tree OpenGL texture settings of 64 "maximum width or height" in texture tab of Image clip node i increased to max 2048 and it worked , maybe other lesser ones values will work too. Before that i also checked graphic card settings and found that XSI was not selected as the 3D apps prefered choice.

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/19/08 at 10:18:32
Hey o/
I'm currently having a lot of problems with XSI on Linux, especially XSI installation in fact, Avid supported distribution is currently Fedora Core 5 ( Yeah you read right, version 5).
The first problem is that this distribution is not provided anymore on Fedora website ( oldest one is the 7 ), so I don't really where to find it. The second problem is that Fedora Core 10 is in beta and about to be released ! 5 versions difference !!!
I tried to install XSI on Fedora Core 9, installation is pretty straightforward, XSI starts pretty fast but it "segmentation fault" during the interface drawing when loading :|
I installed it on Ubuntu 8.04 and it went not too bad: well XSI is taking something like 5 minutes to launch, everything is slow as hell, ( you wait beetween 5 and 10 seconds when you copy/paste something in the script editor, context menu pop with a huge delay, etc ) but it's working at least. So I decided to try sIBL_GUI, I needeed to resort some tricks because XSI can't seem to find python installation in Linux. Finally the interface starte and launched, I outputed the loader script, load it and crash ! :| There is an error with the CreateImageClip function or any other picture load function and I can't even create an image clip from the usual menus :[ Well, I'll report the exact error later today, I'm currently reinstalling Linux for the XXX time this week !
If it don't work, we will need to wait that Avid provides some new release patches so we get a usable Linux release of XSI 7 !

Here is a screen of what I am talking about :

http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/sIBL_Framework/XSI/sIBL_GUI_For_XSI/Others/XSI%207%20-%20Ubuntu%208.04.1.jpg

At the right is some code taken for the SDK documentation, it fails badly, and on the left, is a try to load a picture !

This does not seem to work for me at all.
I launch sIBL_GUI.  I get a "your collection is empty..."  I click Yes and I point to the right directory and nothing happens.

if I press cancel it will launch the GUI.  In the GUI I can manually add a collection in preferences tab.  But there are no images in my collections browser tab. (refresh collection button does nothing)
If try to relaunch GUI again it won't launch anymore until I reinstall the plug-in.

I'm thinking it has something to do with Vista.

omygosh, I feel stupid.  seems one of the HDR image I download from here is causing the problem.  I'm in the process of loading one image at a time and it's working now.

don't think it's problem with your program.. it's these:

Hi o/

I didnt had time to check but I think thoses sIBL Sets are old and not compliant with last sIBL Format specifications. No matter sIBL_GUI should not crash but just ignore them, it's on my todo list. It should be corrected in the next release !

Released 0.97 version of the Addon :
sIBL_GUI should now deal better with corrupted sIBL Sets ( Thanx to superemu for reporting the bug ).
The XSI Addon should work under Linux (at least in part), if I can have some feedback it would be great !

A new template is available with the last release of sIBL_GUI :

It's now possible to update your scene instead of deleting the previous sIBL setup.
There are 2 new options that can be combined for multiple effects and behavior (Update Scene and Override User Tweaks). It's kinda hard to explain precisely what they do without entering in deep details but basically now it should be possible to mix different sIBL set using the Update Scene option : Using the Reflection of an sIBL and the Sun of another, etc.
The code is not fully complete ( especialy Sun related code ), it took me some time to test it and refactor the template but it should work !

Hello :) Thomas already told me, that he did the sIBL_GUI only for XSI7. Does anybody see a possibility to port it to versions 6.02 and 6.5, using the old color management? First the Autoborgs and now this...

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 11/17/08 at 13:43:45
Hi o/

That would be easily possible, it's the template to change and adapt for XSI 6.5. I may take a look at it if I have some time. ( It's a pain, I need to install XSI 6.5, Etc )

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Qwesto on 11/17/08 at 14:16:57
Ahhh that's nice :) I hope it can be used then within 6.02, too? There are many people out there still using the FND. Is you source code free? So I could search in other forums for somebody to compile it. I am very sorry bothering you with this, but I am no coder :( so impossible for me to re-write or modify the script :'(

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 11/17/08 at 14:40:07
I don't have foundation or 6.5 installed, I have a 6.5 somewhere I can deal with, but foundation no idea :|

For the code source stuff there is 2 things in fact :) :
- sIBL_GUI : It's the multi-os / 3d packages sIBL Loader program.
- Templates : they are what sIBL_GUI chew up and are loaded in the target 3d application.

The code source of sIBL_GUI is available as the software is open source but it's not with him that the XSI 6.0 and 6.5 must be dealt, because he is blind and software independant, it's the template used for XSI 7.0 that need to be modified and adapted for XSI 6.5 / 6.02.

There is a browsable archive here with all the XSI Templates versions:

http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/?dir=./sIBL_Framework/XSI/Templates/Mental%20Ray

If you have some friends that can update one of the versions for XSI 6.5/6.02 don't hesitate to ask him (It would be a real time gain for me) and I will include it in the archive, etc :)

I'll try to find somebody, who is interested in compiling it.

You doesn't need to compile anything :) It's the current XSI template that need to be tweaked to work under XSI 6.02/6.5 in fact.

Hahaha, thanks! There you can see, that I don't have the BG to handle that :D

I will quickly edit all "wrong" posts I made ;)
Maybe I will be a XSI 7 User til end of the year, but it would be nice to have the whole XSI scene "enlighted"

Thanks a lot!

P.S.: Buhuhuhhhh I still can't test it  :'(

Hello o/

I just recompiled the XSI Server for XSI 7.01, you can find it here :

http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/?dir=./sIBL_Framework/XSI/sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server/Stable

I'll update the XSI Template and release sIBL_GUI 1.0 really soon ( not that there are too much changes in it, but it will be a milestone :] )

Hey all,
I've just tried server plugin for 7.01 and it doesn't work ... it complains about app version mismatch.

My XSI is 7.01.684.0

Any suggestions or advice?
Many thanks in advance

Mmmh, I'm at work and can't check the version of XSI 7.01 I'm using currently at home but It has worked for me and for the guy on XSI Base that asked me the recompile. I'll check that tonight or this weekend.
I need to find why I need to recompile it for every version Softimage release, it's really annoying :|

Oh and I will release the code too so that users are not stuck at least and can compile it themself.
Just need  Visual Studio C# Express Edition to get it work :

Hey,
Thanks. I have visual studio and know c# so I suppose recompiling wouldn't be a problem.
If you can publish the solution somewhere to download I would give it a try.

Thanks again.

Released 1.00 of the Template and XSI Addon, there was several bugs fixed on it, especially concerning the Update code wich is a pain to do ( I really understimated it ).

I still have some stuff to handle with the Update Code, though it' less urgent and should not prevent usability :

 • Refine Sun Updating (Physical Sun Shader / Light Shader).
 • In Override Tweaks Mode, Try To Disconnect UnSelected Passes.
 • Update Feedback Radius.

Does anyone have the template for XSI 6.5/6?

I don't really have the time currently to code the 6.5/6 template, I should not be really hard to make the 7.0 one work under older versions though, but it definitely needs some tweaks since some shaders and procedures I use, are specific to 7.0.

Updated sIBL_GUI_For_XSI Addon, Rob W. spotted some problems with the Launcher when the addon is installed on a server path ( "\\Server" ). This release should correct that.

By the way, there is  a problem with sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server when installed on a server path : the addon is empty, no dll, nothing found by XSI. I'll try to see what can produce that, but for now I don't have any ideas :|

Voilà !

Hey Rob o/

No sorry I didn't had time to look into this, I had my flat a bit messy because some guys went to fix stuff those last weeks after a flood.
I'll try to give a look at it this week.
The first thing I need to do is to check if the server natively provided by XSI work from the network ( mine is just a modification of it ).

Hi o/

I have searched a bit for this Server problem with UNC Paths, and didn't found anything yet.
Funny thing ( well it's not really funny, but at least it's not my fault ) is that the Server provided by Softimage as an example don't work either on UNC Paths :

I started a thread on Community Dot Softimage Dot Com :

If anyone has an idea, or whatever, I'll be really glad :)

Thanx to Marc-André Belzile, I got sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server working from UNC Paths and Network ! ( Sorry for the delay, I had some hardcore deadlines at work, and I'm playing too much Eve Online :| )

Here is the release :

http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/?dir=./sIBL_Framework/XSI/sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server/Stable/7.01/7.01.698.0_GAC

You need to register the .dll in the Assembly Cache using a command like this :
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin>gacutil.exe /i \\ivy\Workgroup\Addons\sIBL_GUI_XSI\Application\Plugins\sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server.dll
Hello :)

Well :] sIBL_GUI is running fine on Linux, my problem when I tried the XSI template is that XSI wasn't running properly on my Linux Distributions ( Problems With Image Loading ) so I didn't managed to really test the thing out. Since that I didn't tried more since I lost a load of time installing a lots of differents Distributions :| ( Fedora 8 and 9, 32Bit And 64 Bit, Ubuntu, XUbuntu, Suse, Etc...)

If you want to give a try you are welcome, let me know how it's working for you !

I think you are maybe encountering the same problems as me, what is your XSI Linux Version ? I have uploaded a Template with "Error Catch Code" commented so you'll get printed the line where the Template crash.
Copy it in your sIBL_GUI Templates Folder of the XSI Addon.
It should be something like : "Addons/sIBL_GUI_For_XSI/Application/Plugins/sIBL_GUI_Windows/Templates/XSI/7.0"

undefined is a type and javascript word, it should not need the quotes :|

Code (]// One method to test if an identifier (x) is undefined.

Yeah does'nt surprise me much, JScript is specifically a Microsoft Script Language, kind of a javascript spinoff. You never know how those things works in Linux, especially with MainWin and XSI :)

Unfortunately I think it will not be the only problem, when the template was small pretty much everything was working. Now it has nearlly double/triple in size :]

Is it possible to tell me wich XSI Version you are using ? 7.0, 7.1, 7.5 ?

Ok Thanx, so we have the same version currently, can you try this code ( It's VBScript ):
'---------------------------------------------------------
' This example shows how to add an image clip from an image source.
'---------------------------------------------------------
option explicit

' First, add an image source.
Dim oSourceObj, ImageFile
ImageFile = Application.InstallationPath( siFactoryPath ) & "/Data/XSI_SAMPLES/Pictures/xsilogo.jpg"
SIAddImageSource ImageFile, "XSIlogo", oSourceObj

' Now create an image clip from the image source.
Dim oClipObj
SIAddImageClip oSourceObj, "XSIlogo_Clip", oClipObj

' Now output some information about the clip, and its source.
Dim SourceName, SourceFile, XRes, YRes
SourceName = GetValue( oClipObj & ".Source.Name" )
logmessage oClipObj & " Source       : " & CStr(SourceName)
SourceFile = GetValue( oClipObj & ".SourceFileName" )
logmessage oClipObj & " Source File  : " & CStr(SourceFile)
XRes = GetValue( "Sources." & SourceName & ".XRes" )
logmessage oClipObj & " X Resolution : " & CInt(XRes)
YRes = GetValue( "Sources." & SourceName & ".YRes" )
logmessage oClipObj & " Y Resolution : " & CInt(YRes)
It's taken from the SDK Documentation and was'nt working for me :|

I found that the JScript undefined is not working as intended under Linux and producing an error, so I replaced it by null and now it's working !

hello everyone! First of all, a big thanks goes to everyone involved in developing sIBL, it makes life a lot easier.

I just installed sIBL for the first time on my home system (I only switched to XSI 7 recently and I was looking forward to trying it). The installation was completed successfully and, on a first glance, sIBL appears to be working fine (as far as I can tell scripts are output and executed properly) but then something goes wrong.

While in the preview visualization of FG the brightness of the image looks the way it's supposed to, the actual render looks a lot darker than it should (that actually includes the background image).

I tried several scenes with several sIBL files, I loaded an empty scene and executed the script and then rendered it out, I also tried rendering a scene before executing the script and then after executing it and the result was always the same. Everything looks darker than it's supposed to. If I import the sun and apply the env hdri as an environment in an empty scene rather than executing the script the brightness looks right.

I'm a little puzzled since I installed sIBL on a friend's system a couple of days ago and it works fine on the same version of XSI :S

I didn't really understood what you meant. When you do a "Render Region" the render is ok and as it should be, but it's not the case when you are doing a "Render Frame" ?

Hi Rork o/

Good Call with the pass, I'll check that tomorrow.
I'm currently working on some new features for sIBL_GUI, a GPS map has been added, and next versions should be able to get Templates and Help from an Online Repository :)

I checked the behavior with the Passes, and it seems to be correct. Notice that the Template will not connect the Raytype by default on the Passes, you need to enable the "Pass Selection Dialog" in the "Additional Attributes".

I need help.
I have installed sIBL addon in XSI 7 but I am not able to open collections, addon installed fine, when I run it in XSI everything is working fine, but when I try to open collection nothing is showing in the collection browser. I tried my own collections, even downloaded a few from the site, but none of them are showing.
I am using XSI 7 64bit on Windows Vista Bussines 64bit.

Hello Maxxkv !

Can you tell me wich version are you using ?

Can you also launch sIBL_GUI, go to the Preferences Tab, set the verbosity to Debug, and try adding a Collection again, then open the Log Window and tell me if you see any errors ! If any doubts send me the log.

Hi Kel,

Is there any way to register the server addon without having the SDK installed??

@ maxxkv: I'm running 7.01 64 on Vista 64 and it's just running fine. Try uninstalling the addon, restart XSI, reinstall the addon, restart XSI again. Does it still not work? Did you install the proper version? Just asking.

Rork :
I got Maxx by mail,  he was pointing directly to an IBL folder and not his Collection one, problem is solved I think now.

What do you mean by the SDK ?

Hi Kel,

Sorry to be so vague, what I meant to say was you have to register the dll:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin>gacutil.exe /i \\ivy\Workgroup\Addons\sIBL_GUI_XSI\Application\Plugins\sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server.dll

But I don't seem to have these folders or file on my Vista64  install. :-[

Ah :( I don't have Vista so I don't know where this file can be but yeah I'm pretty sure it's coming with ".NET SDK" I'll link you the exe, let me know if it worked :

gacutil.rar

For Information, I just checked and the ".NET SDK" is around 100 Mo, Thx to Microsoft for keeping things simple :)

Hi Kel,

After changing the command line string to the proper folder/dll it registered just fine. And it works without a problem. Thanks for that, now it's all working together just fine!  :D

And yes, I checked the MS site first too, but tried to find a standalone file on the web but couldn't find one.  ;)

Hi o/

sIBL_GUI For XSI 2.0.2 is released.

There was a huge problem where the GPS Map wasn't properlly extracted from the Addon, strange nobody noticed it since sIBL_GUI shouldn't be able to run without it :)
It's now corrected, users using the standalone didn't had this problem.

Rork problem is still not corrected.

Hello,

I could be an FTP Upload problem or extraction one, I installed the Addon yesterday to be sure it was working. I'm downloading the tar.gz from the server, I'll let you know. My connection is a piece of crap, so it's possible there was an upload error or something like that.

Hi again,

I have downloaded the Addon from HDRLabs server ( http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/?dir=./sIBL_Framework/XSI/sIBL_GUI_For_XSI/Stable ) and it's working fine here. I'm on XSI 7.5 32 Bit though. What are you using to uncompress the archive ? Winrar should do the trick.

Let me know if you still have issues.

Hi
Thanks for all your effort , but I still having the same problem!
I've downloaded the file many time without success!
The .rar file has 44.23mb, no problem when extracting with winrar!
The problem is when I try to install addon in XSI like the previous post I get an error installing it
' Error while parsing file: C:\Temp\sIBL_GUI_For_XSI.xsiaddon
' Fatal Error at file C:\Temp\sIBL_GUI_For_XSI.xsiaddon, line 986523, char 22, Message: The input ended before all started tags were ended. Last tag started was 'AddonItem'
So the problem is on line 986523, char 22
I've noticed that all the others line has 60 characters and only the last line 986523 has 21 characters. So the char 22..23...24...etc..until 60. does not exist! logically the last line is incomplete!
or maybe it work for XSI 7.5win_32 only!
I'm running XSI 7.5_win64bit on windowsXP 64bit
best regards

I'll upload the Addon again, but uncompressed this time, it will take a while though.

Sorry the uncompressed Addon wasn't showing on the server because of some PHP filtering, you should be able to see it now :

http://kelsolaar.hdrlabs.com/sIBL_Framework/XSI/sIBL_GUI_For_XSI/Stable/sIBL_GUI_For_XSI.xsiaddon

Edit : Don't bother, the Uncompressed Addon is not good :(

So I'm uploading Again, both the .tar.gz and the uncompressed Addon.
If that fails again you can still get the standalone. You will just miss the launching options in XSI.

Hi Rob !

I fixed the problem with Windows Server Path and Manual / Help Files. It's a Qt problem, where the Url Slashes are changed from "\" to "/" and the QWebView does'nt understand a path like this "file://Server/" from what it seems.

The next sIBL_GUI 2.0.7 Release will correct this behavior.

Hi :)

Yes Maya Template has a mip_matteshadow Shader applied onto the ground, it's something doable in XSI I think, I didn't really looked into it since I didn't had any user request for it, but I'll do a pass on the XSI Template soon to make it at level compared to Maya.

Hello :)

XSI_MR Template has been updated, offering the same ( nearlly ) features than Maya Template :

- Shadow Catching Ground ( The difference with Maya one being that I didn't managed to connect the Environment Branch into its Background Slot, so it's currently a Transparent Background, every Object crossing the Plane ill show otherside ).
- Smart IBL Controls ( Property available in the sIBL Group ).
- Display Layers ( So you can easily Show / Hide Smart IBL Scene Components ).
- Code Refinements ( Cleaned some Fucntions ).

Shadow Catching Ground

Smart IBL Controls

The Template is available from the Online Updater :)

Enjoy !

Hi,

1.5.1 Corrected a bug I introduced during the Refactoring, basically the "Exectue Loader Script" Menu Entry of XSI Addon was broken because of that.
I changed by error the name of the output script :

Code (]OutputScript = @OutputScript | sIBL_XSI_Import.js | String | Output Script[/CODE):
to
OutputScript = @OutputScript | sIBL_XSI_MR_Import.js | String | Output Script

No the parameters are driving Nodes Attributes Values in the Environment Shaders Branches.

Except for a problem where the expressions connecting the Controls to the Nodes Attributes are not evaluated I don't really see what could be preventing the correct output. I'll check that.

Supid me :)  I found it ... i had to turn on the Pass Gamma Correction on in the render manager (apply display gamma correction)

it would be cool if Smart IBL Controls can set this gamma correction in the render manager... but its not that necessary ... i guess someone can forget to turn it on and after 1000 frames of rendering to disk find out that it was off.... The wierd thing is that even when its off the preview shows it with gamma correction... so that was kinda misleading for me :)

I see that you are using this mental ray production shader mip mattshadow shader for the shadow chating ... how about also adding a photographic exposure in the lens shaderafter a camera lens shaders in the pass.... and somehow make that inspect in the Smart IBL Controls :)  then we can have that initialise as the scene is built....

is that something possible right now i am adding it by hand so i can get the iso , shutter, fstop white balance vignetting , tone mapping controls ... its mia Photographic exposure lens shader....

Hello o/

Matt Rouleau from The Embassy, kindly reported me an issue with the last XSI MR Releases : The Options I added to have Gain / Gamma Controls are problematic because I was using the Color_Correction Node which is producing incorrectness in the Output.

I don't really know what's happening but basically the values are not clamped but it's like there is a Color Space change that should not occur.

I updated the Template with a Home Made Gamma Shading Branch that should correct that wrong behavior.

Let me know if there are any problems, I'm really flooded lately and can't really test deeply the stuff I'm deploying ( hence that Color_Correct issue, with more tests I should have spotted it :( )

Every sIBL_GUI User should consider updating their Template to the 1.5.5 Release.

Have Fun o/

Hello,

The Feedback Sphere is a viewport approximation and is not rendered, the renderer use something we can compare as an Infinite Radius Sphere.

If you have mismatch beetween what you have in the Render and the Viewport, try increasing the Feedback Radius / Camera Clipping Planes.

The bigger the size, the closer Render / Viewport will be.

No the problem is that when the my 3D object(a car) moves in distance its size diminishes too much to image objects while when it is near is perfectly okay. I'll try to close the size to check if it changes.

Is there a way to know what settings had the camera that took the photos?

Hi Kel,

Sorry to bother you with this, but the server addon is broken for the 2010SP release. Apparently the .dll has to be recompiled on the new version of Softimage.
The 2010 release is mentioned as 8.0.201.0, the 2010 SP is mentioned as 8.0.249.0

I hope you can find the time to recompile this one soon.  ;)

cheers, and thanks for all the great updates on the latest sIBLGUI releases :D

Hello,

I seem to have some issues installing the latest version of the addon.

No matter whether I drop it in on XSI's window or install it from the menu, the installer crashes XSI every time.

I had similar problem with uninstalling the previous version, but I just deleted the addon directory (was this a bad idea?).

Any ideas how to fix this? I'm running XSI 7.01 on Vista.

Thanks!

I'll take a look at this issue, there is no problem at deleting the Addon directory btw.

The Addon is installing fine here on 7.01 / 7.5 / 2010 / 2010 SP1, I'm on XP 32bit though.

Ok, thanks for checking that!

It could very well be my Vista misbehaving - XSI has been much more unstable after upgrading to Vista.

Well, I guess I try reinstalling XSI and if that fails, then I'll start fresh. With XP :D

Or I can maybe Zip and Send you the directory structure, you only need to extract it and connect a workgroup to it.

I'm running 32bit Vista/W7 and 64bit Vista over here, and don't have any issues with the addon. Or Softimage for that matter. For me apps on Vista/W7 give me a much more stable platform than XP. And 64bit is a joy to work in.

It has nothing to do with Vista and going back to XP will only 'hurt' you in the long run. XP support is declining rapidly, and why running a less secure system? UAC isn't the big bad wolf people cry about.

Yes it takes some time to get used to it, but it's not evil like some people seem to claim.

If you have any stability issues with Softimage, or any app that addresses large amounts of memory, I suggest running some memory tests. Vista/W7 is much more strict on memory, and if you have cheap/faulty RAM it will give you issues. Also video drivers are very important, be sure to run the proper one for the system and Softimage version. And again, ATI cards are more known for issues than NVIDIA cards.

So.. check that first before reinstalling XP  ;)

And to Kel, thanks for the new server addon, much appreciated  ;D

Post by wannabeartist on 11/02/09 at 18:21:31
Kel,

Thanks, that would be very kind, but I'll think I go ahead and actually reinstall Vista as just reinstalling XSI doesn't seem to change that problem. It just might work after that.

And Rork,

I'm not seriously going to downgrade to XP, I don't even have the license anymore  ;)

This PC of mine has been running Vista (32bit) since May and has served pretty decently, to be honest.

It's true that I didn't experience XSI crashes nearly ever on my old XP, but on the other hand, it was a) different hardware and b) my XSI has been in way heavier use during the summer than before - lots of plugins and heavy renders :D

You might be very right about running those memory checks too.

I'll get back to this if the reinstall doesn't help - I know it's going to help the performance anyway, because there's probably tons of stuff in the registry that I don't need anymore.

Hi Kel,

Sorry to  bother you, but I have some questions about the latest versions of sIBL and the server addon...

First of all, how do one set the default template in sIBL_GUI? It's always set to the Maya one, and I cannot seem to find where you can 'lock' this, or is set in the default settings file.

Secondly, I have issues with the SI2010SP server addon. It keeps getting an error on port 12288 after you create the template and click OK.

I've registered the new dll, opened up the firewalls for the port on both pc's, added the GUI and Framework .exe files to the firewall, but so far no luck.
Strange thing is after upgrading my 2010SP workgroup, the 'server' button doesn't work anymore in SI v7 either??

Any thoughts on this??

Thanks,

rob

It's not currently possible, but I added that into my Tasklist :) If you don't use Maya / Max Templates you can delete them, and check the Ignore Missing Templates in the Preferences -> Online Update Tab. So that they'll be ignored when updating.

Hey Kel,

I honestly cant thank you enough for this, my spark and interest in my 3d work has again rekindled thanks to this amazing plug in and program you have wrote.  I will definitely post some render samples once I have finished up a model to really show off, and im close.  For years I have had models in the works but never till now been able to get the lighting I want on them, the flexibility there is with sibl is amazing.  I am a photographer myself so now I want to add to the gallery and help the community, so I am going to do some reading on hdr photo;s and put together some things for you guys.  I was stunned with the quick setup and results I got out of 3 clicks basically.  I do have a question though, I edited a sibl file, changed the multiplyer value lower to around 1 or lower and suddenly when I import into xsi its a spot light instead of a sun.  its all good I can still set it up just fine, but thought it was kinda weird.  The sibl off the site come in as sun lights, but edit the sibl file and it comes in as a spotlight in xsi 2010.  Thoughts?  I havent had much time to read all the info on the plugin and program so maybe i missed something.  Anyways again thank you thank you, finally my characters will come to life in the light I have always wanted.  Really looking forward to pushing this further, but so far I am really impressed.  Thanks again to you and all the people who helped.

Glad you like sIBL.

Your Sun/Light problem is easy to fix. In sIBL-Edit's preferences there is a checkbox, called "Export first light as SUN", which is OFF by default. Just turn that on, and your sun will shine.... ;)  You gotta know that multiple light sources were a late addition to better represent certain indoor and night environments, but we kept the explicit Sun in there for backwards compatibility and because we just like the descriptive concept.

Oh, for contributing back - although sIBL sets are appreciated, it's just as fine if you post renderings. I have just updated the forum code, and now it's easier than ever to attach large images to a posting. Add multiple, and it automatically generates thumbnails and builds a slick gallery....

Hi,

There is something that makes XSI crash in the Addon ( I can load the Workgroup one time in fact, after that  XSI keeps crashing on startup ). I didn't had time to check what the issue is, anyway in the next releases sIBL_GUI will not be included anymore directly into the Addon, the fact sIBL_GUI is a program on his own, with it's dlls and dependencies is not a thing XSI really like when he walks into the Addon directory ( There are errors with the dlls that he tries to load etc ). It was working up to now.
When sIBL_GUI 3 will reach the final release, a new addon will make the setup easier and cleaner.

Anyway here is an emergency release of sIBL_GUI 2.1.1 For XSI  :

sIBL_GUI_For_XSI.rar

- I updated the Template so it can load properly and accordingly with XSI 2011 Api changes.
- You will need to edit this line in the sIBL_GUI_For_XSI.js Plugin file of the addon :
APPLICATION_PATH = "Y:\\sIBL_GUI_For_XSI\\sIBL_GUI_Windows"
and put the path to the sIBL_GUI installation directory ( Don't forget the double backslashes ).

After that you should have sIBL_GUI working as usual ( I hope ).

If you have a Standalone of sIBL_GUI, here is the Template alone :
Softimage_MR.sIBLT

Sorry for the inconvenience !

Hi,

I've just started playing with sIBL and am very, very impressed.

I installed both GUI for XSI and Server on my installation of 2010 and have been experimenting...

Just today I eventually got my serial number for 2011 from Autodesk (long story!) and tried to install the sIBL addons again. The GUI for XSI worked fine but I'm getting an error with the Server addon, saying that it is compiled with the wrong version! The addon uses 9.0.242.0 but my version of 2011 is 9.0.243.0.

Not knowing how addons work I'm surprised that you need to re-compile everytime a new (and mini) version update comes along but do you have plans to release a new version of the Server addon - I'm missing it already!

Thanking you in advance.

Hi,

I just updated the latest sIBL_GUI_XSI_Server version so that it features a version number. That should prevent clashes in the Windows Gac when you run XSI 2011 and 2010 for example. I'll not back compile the older releases though.

In the same subject, I think it's now possible to get rid of the gacutil.exe workflow : You should now be able to drag'n'drop the dll directly in Windows Assembly folder :
c\Windows\assembly
and it should register itself :)

Let me know if there are any issues.

Bug?
I have an issue, i am using the Charleston Sunset from HDR-VFX promo library, and or is there a bug in program or that SIBL is wrong. The SIBL-ground in it needs to be adjusted ie:rotated to fit to horizon line. Would not be a big issue if was just a normal scene but since i am making a simulation i need that SIBL-ground horizontal and when i move the whole scene after unlocking all locks obviously the viewport vs  rendering image shifts.

I am using a 1100 feedback radius. That was the measure i have found that i have the viewport feedback/rendering fit.

Also i am in XSI 2011

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/15/10 at 10:15:13
Hi Pinin !

Are u sure you are not facing the dreaded viewport / syndrom shift ?

Quote:
What is the shift between the viewport visual feedback sphere and the render image ?

When you render using an environment map, the image is kind of warped on an infinite radius sphere ( It's in fact a one unit radius sphere centered on the camera origin ). So if you are way off the center of the viewport with a fairly small visual feedback, you'll encounter a shift.

There are 2 solutions to counter this effect :

 • Increase the visual feedBack scale.
 • Constrain in position the visual feedBack to your render camera.

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Pinin on 10/15/10 at 15:43:30
Hi Kel.

I don't have any shift, 1100 radius is fine. The render is aligned with viewport image.

It is the SIBL ground that doesnt fit to the horizon lines. In one side. The West because it is the sun setting side it is over the horizon and in East is down the horizon line. To fix it i just rotated the SIBL ground and all is okay if not for the fact that i need the ground horizontal.

I hope i explained right. If you have access to Softimage just put the feedback at 1100 and use the default cam. Or if you need i can show you some screenshots.

Correct.

The thick black line are the limits of Sibl-Ground as you can see it is not aligned with the scene.
I suppose this is a mistake in this SIBL.

But .... back to the actual point of this post - Kel, I hear things like these from all over. I think this is an essential difference in our implementations. The background should actually be mapped on a geometry ball, so there a definitive what-you-see-is-what-you-get handling here. It's a hack, but it allows creative freedom. In Lightwave, I move/scale/rotate the background ball quite a bit, actually, just to get the framing I like. It's implemented with a master null that everything else is parented to, so that a rotation around the heading axis also takes the sun light, reflection map and environment along. Translation is ignored for the ENV map, of course....

I'm not quite sure I understand :)

But at the moment in every Templates the different components are rendered with shaders because it's much much faster to use that instead of a geometry piece that elongate the scene data structure.

The feedback in the viewport dictates the orientation of the shaders, only on one axis though because depending of the renderer, you cannot rotate in other axis than the vertical one. The problem here seems to be more about a wrong horizon position in the picture than anything else.

As you can see in picture the sIBL ground is below horizon in one side and above in the other, If it was just a leveling correction shouldn't be both sides above?

Definitely, I'm not sure there is an easy way to fix this without resorting to some grid warping or whatever image deformation trick, this is for the picture.
You can however cheat and adapt / distort your ground to match that picture deformation also, but it's maybe trickier and not even possible in your case because you need a flat ground.

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Pinin on 10/17/10 at 12:10:37
The main error for me is the inclination since i can just unlock and move the feedback up and down..

I think it can be cheated the zone near camera to horizontal. It doesn't need to curve all along from the center.
The issue is the diference between West and East. It means that objects that came from West look much bigger and those that came from East look much smaller without correcting the ground inclination..

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/17/10 at 12:27:56
You can either use the feedback ( make it renderable ) or apply the background on another sphere object inside the scene and use this as a background and deactive the sIBL one ? At the moment I'm afraid that there is no way to rotate the mr shaders on another axis than the vertical one.

I just want to put the lamp posts from background in front of my 3D object.
Usually i just make 3D cylinder, putting it in front of my object give it a matte shadow with mip camera map connected to it with background texture, then in the pass i have a rayswitch also with camera map and backgound texture.

This is possible to do with mentalray matte shadow, but apparently not in sIBL softimage pass.I need to have another pass, or maybe i can reveal the background lamp posts with a mask in FXtree.

I think I understood, you want to make some parts of the background appears front of your object ?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Pinin on 10/22/10 at 23:41:27
Correct

Below is an example.

I was unable to adjust the sIBL background.
The issue i think is that spherical mapping node can't be attached to camera map or directly to matte shadow background slot.

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 10/23/10 at 10:07:01
Ok got it to work. It needs a bit of hack however.

Basically I took the whole Background branch of the sIBL setup and hooked it up where it made sense, in order to do that you will NEED to edit the base.mi file in XSI / Softimage install folder and replace the apply line of the mib_lookup_spherical :

Code (]apply environment[/code):
to that :
apply environment, texture

Now XSI / Softimage will be able to attach the lookup spherical branch to texture slots.

Doing this you can even updgrade the ground shader so that it won't show anything going under it, providing a much better result.

The scene is available here : sIBL_Matte_Shadow_Background.rar

Brilliant! Didn't know was so easy to hack MR. I guess it is the easiness of knowledge.

For sIBL's is still tricky due to their big size to rotate to right place, for example in the one i am in i had to rotate to 48.302, yep centesimal are important.
As an advice at start if someone is trying find just a lamp pole it is almost hopeless with so big images so it is best to put a big object-or scale the lamp post in horizontal level- to know where is camera going. At camera map i also had to de- gamma to 2.2, it is by default at 1.

Thanks.

Back with another issue. I am in: Gloucester Church by HDR Source Store. In the background there are shadow and iluminated parts, so i have to block the sIBL sun with an object to reproduce those shadows in certain objects. The blocking is made by object with a matte shadow material with no self shadowing option to not make a shadow in the road-since the background already have that shadow, that works okay,  but stangely despite the blocking of sIBL sun there is a still and hardedge shadow in the road produced by sIBL sun, it is not affected by the bloking object concerning shadows. Only the light is blocked.

With matte shadow objects

Matte shadow objects hidden

Shadow remain the same.

Any idea?

P.S:There is another problem is that the shadow remain sharp in shadow. I can think i can only manage this cutting part of the road by shadow, making a part with only occlusion and the diract sunlight with normal sunlight crisp shadow.

Concerning this post you have made in the other thread:

Quote:
Ahh isn't your sharp shadow problem only coming from the fact that you are not putting any radius / angle / Softness in the shadows of your lights ?

On my render on the left is default mia_physical_sun softness value and on the right is adjusted softness.

Is it what you meant ? and is it the same thing than in sIBL_GUI For XSI thread ?

KS

The issue is that my 3D object at same time a part of it is in shadow of another object so should make only a soft shadow in the ground, another part in sunlight. and should make hard shadows in the ground.

Another question. I am trying the CTRL-Ghost(http://www.si-community.com/community/viewtopic.php?p=4681#p4681)

to experiment Mentalray IBL,Irradiance/Importons and Progressive Rendering. It seems to give good results.
What would be the changes to do to sIBL to be compatible with it?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 11/04/10 at 08:59:13
Hi Pinin,

CTRL_Ghost being an external dependency of SI, I can't support it. The issue is that if someone don't have it, then the Template will not work, that's why for example the SI templates were not done in Python, AD was not shipping it's Python implementation with SI ( Though they do now in SI 2011 ).

KS

Maybe another implementation, the already existing 2010, 2011 plus Ctrlghost, This template maybe will be converted to 2012 in the future? I understand if you don't want to go there just an idea.

Yeah but I have no idea on how AD will integrate those new features in SI 2012, meaning that I will basically wrote a Template specifically for CTRL_Ghost and that it will be made useless by the next SI release. A sure thing is that AD will not use a geoshader to implement all this, meaning all the code I may write will be obsolete.

I agree if it turns to be obsolete next year, when 2012 will come and nothing relevant can be ported from it to the new MR3.8 then it certainly doesn't deserves development.

Hi Yuri,

I never managed to build sIBL_GUI 3 for Linux in a way that allows me to distribute binaries that would work on any distribution. Linux is kind of a pain for that.
sIBL_GUI however should run properly on it and is tested regulary against it, you however need to grab the source and the dependencies ( PyQt, SQLalchemy ).

There is a sIBL_GUI_Server release for Softimage 9.5.184.0 ( Softimage 2011 Subscription Advantage Pack ).

Always check your Softimage build version in Help -> About Autodesk Softimage... to get your current version.

Notice that there is no difference between x86 or x64 ( It just mean I compiled it on a x64 or x86 SI).

The sIBL Raytype shader that is applied as a enviro shader, is it needed ?  I have deleted it from the pass, I see no difference in the render, what is it's main purpose ?

Why is my background rendering, when I have background rendering turned off in Smart_IBL_Controls?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Rork on 01/31/12 at 07:55:04
Basically the Raytype node is there for render(time) optimization. If you remove it from the pass, your rendertimes will go up.

Not sure why your BG is still rendering when turned off, works on this end. Or do you mean the reflection of the BG?

Oh... what 3D app are you working in?

Not sure why you want to do that, unless you're start to work 'outside' the sIBL workflow.

I deleted the Raytype rendertree that I had in my scene located as a pass shader  by mistake.  I'm not noticing a speed decrease after deleting the RayType pass shader.  How does this pass shader speed up the render ?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Kel Solaar on 02/01/12 at 22:50:47
If you have deleted the Raytype shading tree you shouldn't get any render at all :) Are you sure you are rendering the good pass or deleted the tree in your current pass?

The speed optimization is coming from the fact that different maps are assigned to different ray types, those maps are smaller and more or less harder to sample.

KS

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI

I had to apply the sIBL image set again to the scene.  I got the RayType back that I formally deleted :)  I had just solved this question I'm about to ask. The sIBL_feedback object is rendering in the background with the enviro map, how do I prevent it from rendering in the background, there is no environment shader that is associated with the image on the object ?

One other thing, specular.  Correct me if I'm wrong but if a sIBL set is a "indoor" image set it appears to me, that sIBL unlike previous versions doesn't create a "sun" is this true, only if it's a "indoor" image set ? Before applying the sIBL image collection set once again, I had specular on my object that is all gone, unless it's extremely faint ?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Rork on 02/02/12 at 14:29:52
For the background not to render, open up the sIBL 'Smart Controls' panel inside the sIBL setup. There's a switch for the background, which will give you an alpha channel as well.
Or manually disconnect the 'camera' connection on the RayType node, but you have to fiddle a bit more then.

Secondly, you can turn off a sunlight for any outdoor scene before export/import into your 3D scene.

And yes, a indoor sIBL doesn't have a sunlight ;)
But it should have some lights set up according to the HDR.

And regarding specular, are you talking about reflection or highlight?

I suggest posting some images with an explanation to get to the bottom of this.

rob

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Platinum on 02/03/12 at 03:12:53
I had the background switch toggled off in the Smart Controls panel :) What is presistently rendering is the sIBL background clip which is plugged into the sIBL feedback material ?

Below is a render region of a portion of the object, what you are looking at in the image, should contain some specularity ?

I'm at a loss why before sIBL the render is good, after sIBL some objects render completely black and particle clouds have a completly different hue/tint make up ?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Rork on 02/03/12 at 10:55:07
I still don't understand.
Switching off the background in the panel, will -just- remove the background from the render.
This will 'remove' the sIBL background clip from the render.

What you still see on the objects, is the reflection clip, if the material has a high glossy or reflection value.

Regarding your black or different colored particles, everything will 'obey' to the lighting defined in the HDRI, so there will be colorchanges to regular lighting. Again, also dictated by the settings on the shader.

It might be interesting to save a basic Softimage scene with some objects and materials (without the HDRI, we have lot's) to see what's going on.

I also suggest going to xsibase.com, or si-community.com for more 3D related questions.

There is no spec on the object at all, what I don't understand, when sIBL wasn't in the scene, I could see the spec when I added sIBL the spec was gone unless FG is diffusing it ?

Thanks, I now know that the HDR is suppose to change the color.  Is there a way to keep the previous color before sIBL but have sIBL effect the particles, besides color adjusting the particle color to what I was formally ?

I have a two objects in my scene one of the object after sIBL was added to the scene renders completely black, no matter how many times I re-position the lights in my scene ?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Blochi on 02/03/12 at 15:34:03
Spec is really just the old-school cheat to show the reflection on light sources. Think about it. That's why spec has always been so easy to recognize, because in the real world spec hits are never perfectly circular and perfectly colorless. The real physical phenomenon, that spec is supposed to simulate is reflection.

That's why you have to adjust your material when you want to draw the full benefit from HDR lighting. You can either use an energy-conserving material, or in the simple case you can just use a tiny amount of reflection instead of the specular value.

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Platinum on 02/03/12 at 16:03:49
I now understand sIBL lighting changes not only the lighting, but the colors of a scene.  I understand that spec is just a reflection on a light source, I now have to adjust the colors on some of my objects including particles after applying sIBL.

How come one of my objects is rendering completely black ? How come the reflection background image, is rendering even though in sIBL_control I have toggled off rendering reflection and background?

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI

KS

Title: Re: sIBL_GUI For XSI
Post by Rork on 02/09/12 at 08:53:26
stop posting images that absolutely say nothing......

start doing basic steps with sIBL_GUI started and a empty scene in Softimage:

- from sIBL_GUI send a HDR scene and corresponding template to Softimage, does this work? yes/no

- in Softimage check if all came in properly by looking at the sIBL setup in the explorerview and the pass in the rendertree. Is everything there? yes/no

- with an empty scene, does rendering work when drwaing a region? Do you see a background and empty plane? yes/no

- open the sIBL Control panel. Turn of background. Does it dissapear? yes/no

- If all of the above work, continue by adding a sphere/cube to the scene.
Also, use the architectural shader from now on. The why has already explained to you.

- With the material properly set up with reflection, you should see the environment on the sphere? yes/no

- in the sIBL controls, turn off reflection. Does it disappear on the sphere? yes/no

- Lastly, tun off the lighting. Does the scene go black? yes/no

Try this before posting any other questions. If something fails down the list, try to figure out first why.
If all fails, post proper screendumps of the Softimage interface (settings in PPGs, rendertrees, viewports etc.), so we can see what's going on.

So give us proper information, or theres nothing more to help.

Hi,

I'm quite overwhelmed at the moment and didn't had time / forgot to update the first post. You should be using TcpServer for Softimage Addon now ( No need to recompile ):

Hi, only just started using sIBL yesterday and was having some issues with the xsi loader script, figured I'd add a post incase any other new user comes across the same error, I googled for ages and couldnt seem to find anything :).

Basically every time I tried to import from sIBL (either just running the standard import script or using tcpserver) I kept getting

# ERROR : Invalid procedure call or argument - [line 1131 in C:\\Users\\Spooky\\AppData\\Roaming\\HDRLabs\\sIBL_GUI\\4.0\\io\\loaderScripts\\sIBL_XSI_Import.js]

which seemed to relate to the

if(Options.createBackground)
if(Options.createLighting)
if(Options.createReflection)

areas, e.g. xsi would point to the setexpression of creatbackground, and if I turned that off in sIBL it'd report an error with lighting etc. It still looked like the imports were working though untill today when I noticed the background at render time wasnt matching up with what I was seeing in the viewport.. and also couldnt find the ground shadow plane, which prompted me to investigate further :).

Just fixed it now by replacing Softimage_MR_Standard with an older version I came across googling around, the one that was giving me issues has date modified 05/02/2012 .. the one I'm using now where everything is error free is 25/01/2012 .

The actual set expression lines look to be identicle in both versions to me, so not sure where in the code the issue would be .

So yeah, just thought I'd share my experience on the offchance anyone else comes across this error code, though given the release dates and my inability to find any mention of similar errors on any forum I could well be alone in this one hehe. It wouldnt be the first time I'v had issues with xsi that no-one else has come across, support guys used to love me ;)

Loving sIBL btw, even more so now its importing fully ! :), keep up the good work.

Edit: just curious, were there any major issues with the january version that I should be aware of ? :)

lol, think I may have found one difference between the jan and feb releases myslef.. have been using a silly car mesh I'v been playing around modelling recently as a test object for sIBL, and it had been rendering fine when xsi was half importing everything before giving that error... maybe what through me off.

Seemed to render kinda similar in the indoor paper mill scene.. I did notice the tires were a bit completely black, but have been playing aroudn with surfaces alot recently :). When I stuck it into the desert road scene however I couldnt for the life of me figure out why it looked so odd. You wouldnt believe how long it took me to figure out there was actually no light coming out of the sun ! :D. I guess the jan release uses an out of date mia sun shader, for 2013 atleast ?

Ah well, lesson learned I guess, will add a sphere with no reflections and final gathering off to see what the lighting is actually like (or if there is any atall hehe) be4 diving into renders from now on :)

Where is the option to toggle y - is up, I can't remember.  I have shadows on for a light, I recall that is the option to make shadows work.

Hmm, shadows seem to work ok for me aslong as the light is actually working. Make a sphere with no reflections and turn off final gathering, see if its getting light.. if not you might have to swap out the light's shader with something that works.

Title: Re: error 10061 despite helper script
Post by Rares on 01/22/13 at 04:16:44
Hello all,

I'm getting the error: Exception message line no. '1' : 'LoaderScript | Socket connection error: '[Errno 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it'!' followed by; ERROR   : !> NotificationsManager | 'Mon Jan 21 21:28:44 2013 | 'LoaderScript | Exception raised while sending Loader Script!''.

I've researched this problem with all solutions pointing to the helper script being the key. Since I've got all paths pointed to the right .exe/script and still having the same issue, I'm not sure what else might be causing this. I'm running the addon on softimage 2013 sp1. Again, unless I missed something, I've searched the threads with no other solution other than 'make sure the add on is pointing to the load helper script'. Anyone else come across this with a possible solution?

Thanks

seems like you're not running the server script (installed it), or somewhere the server cannot find sIBLGUI.

For all to work, you need the addon to 'see' sIBLGUI within Softimage menu, but you also need the server script to make the connection between the two.

see page 1 of this thread to see if you missed something.

Hope that helps,

rob

Thanks for the suggestion Rork.

I did install the server addon as well but it conflicted with the helper script addon and generated errors, so I had to uninstall it.

In what way does it conflict?

Did you uninstall the old server addon that was used for the older versions of Softimage? If not, that might explain the conflicts.

You only need the latest python server script for it to work with sIBLGUI.
Other than that I'm out of ideas for now..

Hello, what is the best way to move the sIBL from the center of the scene, i have a point cloud that needs to be at certain position and i prefer to move the sIBL , moving the null doesn't work unfortunately it has locks, i deleted them but still something is blocking the movement.

Since all is contained ina null i would expect that it would just move by it and it had no locks.

Hello,
I'm new here, so first - thanks for this great (and free) piece of software that sIBL_GUI is!

I'd like to ask if there are any plans to create a template for the upcoming Redshift renderer for Softimage?

You know... impressive biased GPU renderer... very ambtious and fast paced development... just entered the beta stage recently.

Thanks and best regards,
Eugen

I am trying to apply sIBL environment to an old scene with 15 passes

Im using the Arnold Dome light loader script with passes selection set to  true, when i run the script in SI (2013 64bit) i get the sIBL GUI Passes Chooser, if i leave everything ticked on and click OK it gets to 90% then hangs indefinitely,

the only way i can get it to not crash it to run the loader script multiple times and tick one pass at a time.

and this doesn't work cos when it creates an environment for the next shot it removes it from the previous,

anything more than one at a time will crash  :-/

has any one successfully applied sIBL environment shader tree to a scene with more than one pass in SI?

thanks,

Will.

Yes, but that would involve some serious manual copying and pasting.

One way is to set up a lightrig with sIBLGUI, and create/save a compound.
Rinse and repeat.
Now create your passes and drop/unpack the compound.

Done it a couple of times this way. Tedious but it works.
One thing though, you don't have separate sIBL controls for every pass.

I will take a look at that!

Seems like it's sorted! There was quite a few stuff broken with latest Arnold builds.

Now regarding the fact the setup gets deleted, if you want multiple ones in the same scene, you can change the prefix in sIBL_GUI to another one, for instance sIBL1, sIBL2, sIBL3, etc...
